On your paper, write 1 sentence per day for each of the examples. (Rule 6) Use a comma to separate the city from the state and after the state in a document. If you use the two-letter capitalized form of a state in a document, you do not need a comma after the state. Note: With addresses on envelopes mailed via the post office, do not use any punctuation. Examples: I lived in San Francisco, California, for 20 years. I lived in San Francisco, CA for 20 years. (Rule 7)Use commas to surround degrees or titles used with names. Commas are no longer required around Jr. and Sr. Commas never set off ll, lll, and so forth. Example: Al Mooney, M.D., knew Sam Sunny Jr. and Charles Starr lll. Return to Driver

DOL Adverb Can Tell How Adverbs give us more information about the verb (action) in a sentence. Many, but not all, of the adverbs that tell how are easy to find in a sentence because they end in the letters –ly. Example: He jumped excitedly at the good news. Here are some adverbs that tell how something is/was done: fast happily quickly slowly rapidly suddenlyeagerly gracefully carefully 1. The little boy wrote his name on his homework page. 2. The proud mother leaned to kiss her newborn baby’s cheek. 3. The red-headed girl cried when her ice cream fell down. 4. We watched as she danced on the stage. Return to Driver

DOL A11. On your paper combine the following sentences to make into one sentence. The cookie jar was empty. Mother made a batch of cookies. She put the cookies in the jar. Our teacher read us three stories. They were funny stories. She read them to us today. We wandered along the crowded wharf. We watched the tall ships. The ships sail into the harbor. Return to Driver

On your paper, write 1 sentence per day for each of the examples. (Rule 5a) Use a comma to separate the day of the month from the year and after the year. Example: Kathleen met her husband on December 5, 2003, in Mill Valley, California. _________________________________________________ (Rule 5b) If any part of the date is omitted, leave out the comma. Example: They met in December 2003 in Mill Valley. _________________________________________________ Return to Driver

55
(Rule 1) To avoid confusion, use commas to separate words and word groups with a series of three or more. Example: The $10 million estate is to be split among my husband, daughter, son, and nephew. Omitting the comma after son would indicate that the son and nephew would have to split one-third of the estate. (Rule 2) Use a comma to separate two adjectives when the word and can be inserted between them. Examples: He is a strong, healthy man. We stayed at an expensive summer resort. You would not say expensive and summer resort, so no comma.
56
CONTEXT CLUES Skilled readers often use context clues to determine a word’s meaning. CONTEXT refers to the words or sentences before and/or after a certain word that hint at or clarify a word’s meaning. Look for: Restatement, example, comparison, contrast, and cause/effect. It may also be signaled by a comma or other type of punctuation. RESTATEMENT: SIGNAL WORDS Which is/meansThat isOr In other wordsAlso known asAlso called DEFINITION: SIGNAL WORDS LikeFor instanceThisThese include IncludingEspeciallyTheseFor example Such asOther COMPARISON: SIGNAL WORDS AsResemblingAlsoRelated LikeSimilar toSimilarityIdentical In the sameJust likeLikewise CONTRAST: SIGNAL WORDS (Antonyms ) ButOn the other handDissimilar Although Different from/than Unlike On the contraryIn contrast to However Return to Driver

A typical newspaper article contains five (5) parts: Headline: This is a short, attention-getting statement about the event. Byline: This tells who wrote the story. Lead paragraph: This has ALL of the who, what, when, where, why and how in it. A writer must find the answers to these questions and write them into the opening sentence(s) of the article. Explanation: After the lead paragraph has been written, the writer must decide what other facts or details the reader might want to know. The writer must make sure that he/she has enough information to answer any important questions a reader might have after reading the headline and the lead paragraph. This section can also include direct quotes from witnesses or bystanders. Additional Information: This information is the least important. Thus, if the news article is too long for the space it needs to fill, it can be shortened without rewriting any other part. This part can include information about a similar event.
