1 The Speech Detective’s Clue Chronicle February Issue – Parent Edition New Happenings Love and Friendship are two of the themes we see in the month of February because of Valentine’s Day. In the speech-language therapy sessions, we will carry-over and expand these themes. Activities for this month will focus on various qualities of ‘love’ and ‘friendship.’ For example, when we talk about friendship, we’ll discuss the characteristics of a good friend (e.g., respectful, trustworthy) and the different ways people express love (e.g.., for family, for friends). We included ‘feeling’ vocabulary that continues the themes of love and friendship. The vocabulary centers on various positive and negative feelings (e.g., excited, disappointed). These topics will promote more complex ideas and more colorful expressive language. Speech & Language To Go In hopes to carry-over the very important work being done in school and in speech-language therapy sessions, we recommend the following activities that your family can try together: 1. Model the type of language you would like your child to use with family members. For example, instead of your child not speaking when they are upset the parent can say, “Why not use your words and tell me how you’re feeling? If we talk about our feelings, we could feel better.” Then the parent models the language the child can use. Then the parent can say, “Okay, I will tell you what we say: I feel mad because Alex took my toy.” Hopefully this exercise allows your child to use feeling words through imitation and creativity. This activity will also give them the words to express themselves. 2. Make 3 or more paper faces showing different emotions (e.g., scared, happy, angry, sad). Place the paper face in front of your face and say, “This is my sad/mad/happy face. I feel happy when I spend time with my brother!” Use each paper face, label the feeling, and mention when you experience that feeling. Then it’s your child’s turn to use the paper faces and express when they feel each emotion. Give as many examples and models as they need. Sometimes it’s difficult for children to find the words; however, they will find the correct words after we use and model them. Encouraging your child to use his/her words when he/she is happy/excited/upset is a good way to enhance communication and to develop a better understanding of your children. The children are a mini-reflection of who we are and we want them to be productive, engaging, and responsible people in the community. Giving our children the tools to better communicate is just one step closer for them to become the ‘young people’ we want them to be in the world. In the speech-language therapy sessions, we will carry over and expand these themes. 3 La Crónica de Pistas Detectives en El Habla Edición de Febrero – Para Padres Los Nuevos Acontecimientos El Amor y La Amistad son dos temas que vamos encontrar el en mes de Febrero porque vamos a celebrar El Día de San Valentín. En las sesiones de terapia del habla y el lenguaje vamos a abordar y expandir este tema. Las actividades para este mes se enfocarán en las diferentes cualidades relacionadas con el amor y la amistad. Por ejemplo, cuando nosotros hablemos de amistad discutiremos las características de un buen amigo (Ej. respetuoso, alguien en quién podemos confiar) y las diferentes formas en las que la gente expresa amor (Ej. amor por la familia, amor por los amigos). Estos temas ayudarán a su niño [a] a promover ideas más complejas que se verán reflejadas en el uso de un lenguaje expresivo, con más colorido. La Terapia del Habla y Lenguaje en La Casa En aras de continuar con la importante labor que se realiza en la escuela y en las sesiones de terapia del habla y el leguaje, le recomiendo las siguientes actividades para que las trate con su familia: 1. Ejemplifique/modele el tipo de lenguaje que le gustaría que su niño[a] usara con los miembros de su familia. Por ejemplo, en vez de que su niño [a] no hable cuando está enfadado, el padre/cuidador puede decir: “Por qué no usas tus palabras y me cuentas qué estas sintiendo? Si hablamos acerca de nuestros sentimientos/emociones nos podremos sentir mejor.” Después, el padre puede modelar el lenguaje que el niño [a] puede usar. El padre puede explicar: “Te diré lo que puedes decir: Me siento enfadado porque Alex cogió mi juguete.” Espero que este ejercicio le permita a su niño [a] usar palabras que denoten sentimientos a través de la imitación y la creatividad. Esta actividad también le dará a su niño [a] palabras para expresarse. 2. Elabore 3 o más caras en papel que muestren las diferentes emociones (Ej. asustado, feliz, enfadado, triste). Coloque la cara del papel al frente de su cara y diga, “Esta es mi cara feliz, triste, y/o enfadada. Me siento feliz cuando paso tiempo con mi hermano!” Use cada cara de papel, indique la emoción/sentimiento y también mencione en que situación o cuando usted experimenta esta emoción. Luego es el turno de su niño [a] de usar las caras de papel y expresar cuando el/ella siente cada emoción. Provea todos los ejemplos y modelos que sean necesarios. Algunas veces es difícil para los niños encontrar las palabras para expresarse por eso los modelos y/o ejemplos les ayudaran a hallar la palabra(s) indicadas. Fomentar en su niño el uso de palabras cuando el/ella está feliz, entusiasmado y/o disgustado, es una buena manera de mejorar la comunicación y de desarrollar una mejor comprensión en su niño (a). Los niños son un reflejo en miniatura de lo que somos y de lo que queremos que sean: productivos, participantes activos y personas responsables en la comunidad. Dándole a nuestros niños las palabras y las herramientas necesarias para comunicarse, estamos un paso mas cerca para que ellos lleguen a ser los jóvenes que queremos que sean en este mundo.
