And so the conversation needs to change as well. Yesterday, the conversation was about consolidation and cost. Today, the conversation is about the new breed of benefits that cloud computing delivers. It’s all about transforming the way IT serves your business by harnessing a new breed of power. Microsoft is the only company that brings all of the pieces together in an integrated, comprehensive way. With our long-term vision to change the world through computing, we help every customer transform the datacenter of today into the private cloud of tomorrow, with a pathway to the public cloud and beyond. With that said – cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of applications as standardized IT services, and inherently has four key attributes: Pooled Resources: As I mentioned earlier, we often hear that cloud computing is just big virt. It’s not. Cloud Computing uses virtualization but it adds significantly to virtualization. It pools those resources together and allows you to dynamically provision and scale applications. Self Service: Once you pool your resource, Cloud Computing provides a self service way for the business to get at those resources or more specifically by providing self-service IT infrastructure to business units and departments with an SLA. This forces service-level discussion and removes the burden to procure, provision and manage infrastructure on a per application, ad-hoc basis Elastic – Scale up (or scale down) dynamically as resource needs change, enabling faster delivery of capacity. Usage Based – Paying for only what you use, when you need to use it I am sure just hearing the attributes the benefits are crystalizing for each of you but I do want to spend a few minutes talking about the biggest benefits from our perspective: Focus: This is about having more people able to focus on higher-level parts of the stack, managing those applications SLAs, rolling out new applications, not having to worry about the underlying infrastructure Agility: This is not only about being able to deliver the applications more quickly to your users and to your customers, but also being able to respond to changes in demand. So, the next time the marketing department launches a campaign, doesn't tell anybody, your public website is underwater, it's very easy to scale that out quickly to meet that demand. Economics: Because you're running multiple workloads on the same overall infrastructure, you get better utilization across those applications. And because the Cloud pools together these resources, you can buy broader sets of resources at one time, lowering the overall cost. So, for agility and focus and economics, you have great motivation to move to the Cloud, and those benefits accrue to both public and to private Cloud Computing.

It is important to understand how a cloud application like Azure changes the purchasing decisions of a customer first…. Generally, when a customer is thinking about buying capacity in the form of servers, they set an annual budget and we determine how much capacity we need to deliver against the budget. But generally load doesn’t follow a typical pattern. Sometimes you need more and sometimes less, depending what applications you are running. This makes it really hard to budget. So for example, a customer sets a budget and buy enough capacity to cover any peak loads. When they reach maximum capacity, they budget again and buy more capacity to cover them for another period of time. This is really inefficient however, as a lot of the time you have excess capacity that is not being used. At some point you have less capacity than you need because you are trying to manage a budget - so then urgent acquisitions of H/W comes usually at a higher cost - then usually when you finally buy the infrastructure to support the load the capacity disappears - and you are again wasting capacity again. In these scenarios, a lot of the available capital expenditure of a company is tied up in assets like hardware, a lot of the time not being fully utilised. This money could be better invested in other assets/equipment and is a barrier to innovation because money is tied up in a fixed asset that could be used for other things. Those VMs are created using Windows Azure Virtual Machines, the platform’s Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering. Developers can supply their own VM images as ordinary VHDs or use VHDs provided by Windows Azure, with support for both Windows Server and Linux. Once the VMs exist, developers and testers can use them to build and test a new application, customizing the VMs as they see fit (step 2). Why would you want to do this? Two main reasons - low cost and speed. Windows Azure VMs are available to their users in a few minutes, while deploying VMs in an organization’s own datacenter can take days or weeks. Also, an organization pays for public cloud VMs by the hour, at prices ranging from $0.02 to $1.10 per hour. This is relatively inexpensive, and the VMs can be shut down when they’re not in use, making them even cheaper. Furthermore, with a gallery of images to readily choose from - like Windows Server, SQL Server, and various Linux distributions - your developers can quickly grab the images and start building or testing applications. In addition to using VMs in Azure to build a test and dev environment, your developers can rapidly create apps using the various other services that would usually require time to set up on-premises. For example, there are ready- to-use-services in Windows Azure such as caching or NoSQL databases or SQL Database which are offered as services. Typically, if you had to setup a development environment on-premises, you’d need up servers for all of these and you’d need licenses. With Azure, you eliminate all of this and give your developers a developer friendly environment. Benefits: Deliver Faster. Agile development with no waiting for IT, new hardware, or availability of existing dev/test boxes. Cost. Eliminate cap-ex expense and yet build test environments that scale better than ever. Use Existing Tools. Continue using the development languages, tools and lifecycle technologies you are using today. Test Better. Build bigger test environments that simulate real customer load including spikes without resource contention on the cloud’s “infinite” resources. Leave Production Alone.
