5 Proportional typeface A font in which each letter, character, or symbol has been given just the right amount of space It is important that the letters and numbers in any font make it easy to read. Thus each character, whether it is a letter or a number, is given a certain amount of space on either side so that when all the letters of a word are put together, we can easily read the word. 10 Baseline Baseline is the imaginary line the type sits on. Even though you cannot see it, this text sits on a straight line. The baseline is not only used to keep the text straight, it is used to help determine the size of the font and the distance between on line and the line below it. 11 Mark Up Mark Up is a universally accepted system of coding providing written directions to people who work with type. An example would be 12/14 X 24 This translates to: a 12 pt font size A 14 pt leading and 24 pica line measure (or length) Markup would include other instructions such as text inset, indenting, font family and color. 12 Point A Point is a fraction of a Pica. It takes 12 points to make 1 pica so it would be 1/12 of a pica. It is used to represent the size of a Font. 13 Pica A Pica is a unit of measure like centimeters or inches. It is used in Publishing to represent the size of something such as the page size. 1 Pica is equal to 12 points (written p12 or 1p0) Una pica es una unidad de medida como centímetros o pulgadas. 14 Line Measure the length of the line measured in Picas. It is calculated by taking the font size and multiplying by 2 or 2.5 to come up with the optimal line length. This number is always in Picas. For example: With a font size of 12 pts, the line measure would be (12 X 2) 24 or (12 x 2.5) 30 Picas.

15 Leading Distance between one line of type to the next measured from baseline to baseline. In the example to the right, the first frame has a smaller leading thus the lines are closer to each other. Distancia entre una línea de tipo a la siguiente medida desde la línea base al valor basal. 16 Overset Text When the text box is in overflow and the text does not fit and it is clear that text is missing. 18 Text Frame Options When a text frame is active, you can right click on it to open a dialog box that will allow you to edit additional optional settings such as text inset, columns and vertical alignment. Ctrl + B is the shortcut.
