1 Día de los muertos Day of the Dead is a week-long holiday when the souls of the dead return to be with their families for one night. That night is November 1 and the early morning of November 2. Like so many other elements of Mexico's culture, this holiday is a mixture of Prehispanic and Christian religious ideas.

2 The celebration is not sad and dreary, but cheerful. People are happy to think that the person they loved will return to be with them and enjoy the pleasures of life with their family. It is also said that death in traditional Mexican culture does not have the same meaning as it does among North Americans and Europeans.

4 En el cementerio, se ponen arcos decorados con flores, y se hacen diseños encima de las tumbas. Por las noches, las velas atraen los espíritus del otro mundo

7 Calaveras/Calacas José Guadalupe Posada, un artista genial, vivía en México durante un período turbulento en la historia de Mexico. Posada popularizó un símbolo del México antiguo: la muerte. Aquí a la derecha es una de las más famosas “calacas” Calavera Catrina. Posada used the "calaveras" to mock human existence and express the tragic destiny of man. The calaveras portrayed famous heroes, politicians, revolutionary leaders, and the common person - - the water-carriers, street sweepers, and vendors. They formed a fleshless depiction of Mexican society -- a sort of x-ray of the collective soul of the people.
