El pretérito The preterite tense is used to talk about actions that occurred in the past. These events occurred and ended at specific times These events usually lasted a short period of time. There are quite a few irregular verbs in the preterite tense.

El pretérito There are very few stem changes in the preterite tense.
If a verb is an –ir verb and has a stem change, it will have one in the 3rd persons. The stem change in the preterite will be similar, but not the exact same. Ejemplo: Dormir has an o to ue stem change in present, in preterite has an o to u stem change.

El pretérito irregular
Many of the irregular verbs are completely irregular. However, there are a large group of irregular verbs that fall into patterns. These verbs are identified by the way they are spelled when conjugated. Some examples are: -gar verbs, -car verbs, zar verbs, y verbs, and j verbs.

My tip would be to remember which infinitives are irregular. At this point, do not try to memorize all of the conjugations. Once you have that information memorized, whenever you come across these verbs you can look them up!
