2 When giving information, you often use an impersonal subject such as one, they, you or people. In this way, the information or action is stressed rather than the person doing the action. People say that Lima is very interesting. People say that Lima is very interesting.

3 a. The Spanish equivalent of these impersonal expressions is: se + third- person singular Se dice que Lima es muy interesante. Se dice que Lima es muy interesante.

4 b. The impersonal se can also be used to express an action in the passive voice when no agent is expressed. In such cases the following format is used: se + third-person singular verb + singular subject se + third-person singular verb + singular subject se + third-person plural verb + plural subject se + third-person plural verb + plural subject Example: Se abre la oficina de turismo a las 8:00 pero no se abren las tiendas hasta las 10:00. Example: Se abre la oficina de turismo a las 8:00 pero no se abren las tiendas hasta las 10:00.

5 c. The se passive is a very common construction and is frequently seen in signs giving information or warning. Se habla español. = Spanish is spoken here Se habla español. = Spanish is spoken here

6 d. The third person plural of a verb may also be used to express an action in the passive voice when no agent is expressed. Se venden periódicos en el quiosco. = Newspapers are sold in the kiosk. Se venden periódicos en el quiosco. = Newspapers are sold in the kiosk.
