2 Telling what people do All verbs, or action words, in Spanish belong to a family, or conjugation. Necesitar – to need Buscar – to look for Mirar – to look at Comprar – to buy Hablar – to talk Pagar – to pay

4 Since the ending of the verb in Spanish indicates who performs the action, the subjects (yo, tú, él, & ella) are often omitted. Hablo español.  I speak Spanish. (Use –o when you talk about yourself) Compras la ropa.  You buy the clothing. (Use –as when you talk to a friend.) Mira la television.  He/she looks at the TV. (Use –a when you talk about someone else.) Senora, ¿Estudia mucho?  Ma’am, do you study a lot? (Use –a also when addressing someone in a formal fashion.)

6 Mis amigas y yo estudiamos para el examencito.  My friends and I study for the quiz. (Use –amos when you talk about yourself and someone else.) Alberto y Teresa toman el bus escolar.  Alberto and Theresa take the school bus. (Use –an when you are talking about two or more people.) In most parts of the Spanish-speaking world, except for some regions of Spain, there is no difference between formal and informal address in the plural. Ustedes toman muchos apuntes.  You all take a lot of notes. (Use –an also when addressing a group of people.)

7 Den la información Ella trabaja en Los Ángeles y yo… Tú y yo estudiamos para el examen y Pedro… Matilde habla italiano y nosotros… Yo pago en la caja y usted… Manuel toma el bus escolar y usted… Ustedes necesitan una pluma y ellos… Tú tomas refrescos y nosotros…
