2 COMENZAR A To begin to do something = comenzar a
They begin to do the homework. Ellos comienzan a hacer la tarea. Practice: She begins to read in the morning.  My sister begins to vacuum.  Ella comienza a leer por la mañana. Mi hermana comienza a pasar la aspiradora.

3 GUSTAR Use “A” if you say who you are talking about Le gusta leer.
She likes to read. A mi madre le gusta leer. My mom likes to read. Practice: They like to play soccer.  My siblings like to play soccer.  Les gusta jugar el fútbol. / A ellos les gusta jugar el fútbol. A mis hermanos les gusta jugar el fútbol.

4 GUSTAR (continued) GUSTAR + INFINITIVE
Don’t conjugate the second verb! Me gusta jugar los deportes. Le encanta cocinar. Practice: I like to watch TV.  My mom loves to cook.  Me gusta ver la televisión. A mi madre le encanta cocinar.

5 PENSAR QUE In English, both of these phrases are correct:
I think math is difficult. I think that math is difficult. In Spanish, you MUST say “I think THAT math is difficult.” Pienso que las matemáticas son dificiles. Practice: We think that Spanish is fun.  Pensamos que el español es divertido.

6 QUERER + INFINITIVE TO WANT (TO DO SOMETHING) Mi madre quiere cocinar.
Don’t conjugate the second verb! Practice: My brother wants to cut the lawn.  I don’t want to make the bed.  Mi hermano quiere cortar el césped. No quiero hacer la cama.

7 TENER QUE To say that you have to do something:
Tengo que hacer la cama. I have to make the bed. Practice: She has to study for the test.  We have to clean the kitchen.  Ella tiene que estudiar para el examen. Tenemos que limpiar la cocina.

8 TIME To say what time it is RIGHT NOW: Son las ocho de la noche.
To say AT WHAT TIME SOMETHING HAPPENS: El partido de fútbol es a las ocho de la noche. Practice: It is 3:30 in the afternoon.  The party is at 7:00 in the evening.  Son las tres y media de la tarde. La fiesta es a las siete de la noche.

9 LLAMARSE Me llamo  Se llama  Mi nombre es  Su nombre es 
DO NOT SAY ME LLAMO ES!!!!!!! “I call myself is” I call myself He/she calls himself/herself My name is His/her name is

10 NOUN + ADJECTIVE In Spanish, the noun comes FIRST and then the adjective. Tengo una cama grande. Practice: We live in a white house.  She is a pretty girl.  Vivimos en una casa blanca. Ella es una chica bonita.

11 POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVE + ARTICLE
You CANNOT use both a possessive adjective (mi, tu, su, etc.) and an article (el, la, un, una, etc.) Yo duermo en mi la cama. = I sleep in my the bed??? Yo duermo en mi cama. / Yo duermo en la cama. I sleep in my bed. / I sleep in the bed.
