2 The Preterite The preterite is used to express an action completed at a definite time in the past. It is usually referred to as the past tense in English. In English, regular verbs in the past tense, such as danced, end in –ed. Others, such as swam are irregular.

3 Regular preterite –ar endings
yo nosotros nosotras vosotros vosotras él ella usted ellos ellas ustedes -amos -aste -asteis -aron

4 Nosotros The nosotros (as) form is the same in the preterite and the present tense. Context clues, such as ayer, help you to know in which tense the verb is (preterit or present).

5 There are no stem-changes in preterite –ar verbs!
NOTE! There are no stem-changes in preterite –ar verbs!

I walked the beach yesterday. (caminar) la playa ayer. You scuba-dived yesterday. (bucear) ayer. They lifted weights yesterday. (levantar) pesas ayer. We sneezed yesterday. (estornudar) ayer. Ya’ll swam yesterday. (nadar) ayer. She rode the bike yesterday. (montar) en bicicleta ayer.

7 Pruébalo… Present Preterit ¿(bucear) hoy? No, (bucear) ayer.
Are you scuba-diving today? No, I scuba dived yesterday. ¿(bucear) hoy? No, (bucear) ayer. Is Josefina sun bathing today? No, Josefina sunbathed yesterday. ¿(tomar) Josefina el sol hoy? No, Josefina (tomar) el sol ayer.

8 ¡Ojo! One little accent changes everything! Hablo por teléfono.
I talk on the phone. Hablo por teléfono. She talked on the phone yesterday. Habló por teléfono ayer. One little accent changes everything!
