1 The Verb gustar By Jami Sipe

2 The verb gustar does not translate well into English.
Gustar = to be pleasing to In English, we would say, “like.” Ejemplo: In Spanish we say: Bachata music is pleasing to me. but in English,we actually say I like bachata music.

3 Indirect Object Pronouns
Gustar is used with indirect object pronouns not subject pronouns. Indirect Object Pronouns Singular me (me) te (you, familiar) le (you - formal/him/her) Plural nos (us) os (you all familiar - Spain) les (you - formal/them)

4 Gustar has only 2 forms: Use gusta if the thing you like is singular or an infinitive. Ejemplos: Me gusta el libro. = (The book is pleasing to me.) Me gusta bailar. = (Dancing is pleasing to me.) Use gustan if the things you like are plural. Ejemplo: Me gustan los tacos. = (Tacos are pleasing to me.)

5 To talk about likes and dislikes
with gustar … Use this formula! (indirect object pronoun) + form of gustar + what you like

6 Ejemplos: Singular I like the red car. Me gusta el carro rojo.
You like to dance with elephants. We like the food. They like to sing in class. Me gusta el carro rojo. Te gusta bailar con elefantes. Nos gusta la comida. Les gusta cantar en clase.

7 Plural Más ejemplos: Me gustan fresas. I like strawberries.
Le gustan perros grandes. Les gustan papas fritas. Nos gustan carros rápidos. I like strawberries. She likes big dogs. You all (for) like French fries. We like fast cars.

8 For purpose of clarification
When you want to specify who the subject is, use A (person) at the beginning: A Sofia le gusta la casa. A Selena y Jordan les gusta la bandera. A Graciela y yo nos gustan elefantes.

9 A Filith no le gusta tomar un examen. =
To say someone does not like something, or does not like to do something use “no” before the phrase. Ejemplos: No me gusta el pescado. = (I don’t like fish.) A Filith no le gusta tomar un examen. = (Filith does not like to take a test.)

10 Preguntas ¿Te gusta leer? ¿Te gusta perder?
¿Te gustan las uvas o las naranjas? ¿Qué clases te gustan? Sí, me gusta leer. No, no me gusta perder. Me gustan las uvas. Me gustan el español y la biología.
