2 You know many adjectives:
inteligente, bueno, grande, alto, largo….etc

3 Many adjectives that we use in Spanish are actually the verb form called the past participle. For example, in the chapter aislado, animado, and situado are actually the past participles of the verbs aislar, animar, and situar.

4 How do you form a past participle?
hablar - ar + ado = hablado comer - er + ido = comido vivir - ir + ido = vivido Contaminar =contaminado Situar = situado Dormir = dormido Esconder = escondido

5 Most past participles can be used as adjectives
Most past participles can be used as adjectives. Like other adjectives, they agree in gender and number with the nouns that they modify. La puerta está cerrada. The door is closed. Las puertas están cerradas. The doors are closed. El restaurante está abierto. The restaurant is open. Los restaurantes están abiertos. The restaurants are open.

6 ¡Ojo! Irregular forms abrir - abierto = opened
componer - compuesto = fixed cubrir - cubierto = covered decir - dicho = said describir - descrito = described devolver - devuelto = returned escribir - escrito = written freír - frito = fried hacer - hecho = made, done

7 ¡Ojo! Irregular forms ir - ido = gone morir - muerto = dead
poner - puesto = put resolver- resuelto = resolved romper- roto = broken, ripped ser- sido = (to be) been ver- visto = seen volver - vuelto = returned / turned into

8 Rule: -er and -ir verbs Note that for -er and -ir verbs, if the stem ends in a vowel, a written accent will be required. leer__leído_ caer__caído___ oír__oído__ creer_creído____

9 Rule: influir, contribuir y construir
Note: this rule does not apply, and no written accent is required for verbs ending in -uir. (construir, seguir, influir, distinguir, etc.) influir_influido__ contribuir_contribuido____ construir__construido__

10 Past participles as adjectives
Remember!. Since we use the past participle as adjectives they must agree in gender and number with the noun or pronoun they refer to. We frequently use estar with the past participle to describe a condition that exists now or existed in the past. El aire está contaminado. La torre está situada. Las luces están encendidas.

15 FYI The past participle can be combined with the verb "ser" to express the passive voice. Use this construction when an action is being described, and introduce the doer of the action with the word "por." Can you see where the past participle is used?
