2 The verb “Tocar” The verb tocar is used to mean many different things!
to play (an instrument) to touch Today we will learn how to use it to express WHOSE TURN IT IS to do something

3 TOCAR… SIMILAR TO “GUSTAR”
When we use “tocar” to express turns, we conjugate it in the same way we conjugate the verb “gustar.” (A mí) me toca (A nosotros) nos toca (A ti) te toca (A vosotros) os toca (A él/ella) (A ellos/ellas) (A usted) (A ustedes) (A Juan) le toca (A los estudiantes) les toca

4 Emphasis Remember, just like “gustar” we can add “a” + subject to the beginning of the sentence ONLY IF we need to EMPHASIZE who we are talking about. Me toca sacar la basura. It’s my turn to take out the trash. A mí me toca sacar la basura. It’s my turn to take out the trash. Both of the above sentences mean the same thing, but the second one EMPHASIZES that it’s MY turn.

5 CLARIFICATION We can also add “a” + subject to the beginning of the sentence ONLY IF we need to CLARIFY who we are talking about. Le toca hacer la cama. It’s his turn to make the bed??? It’s her turn to make the bed??? It’s your turn to make the bed??? A mi hermana le toca hacer la cama. It’s my sister’s turn to make the bed. We add the “a” + subject to make sure the listener understands who we are talking about.

6 PRACTICAMOS Me toca dar de comer al gato. ¿Te toca lavar los platos?
A mi madre le toca cocinar. A mi hermano le toca cortar el césped. A mí me toca hacer las camas. It’s my turn to feed the cat. Is it your turn to wash the dishes? It’s my mom’s turn to cook. It’s my brother’s turn to cut the lawn. It’s my turn to make the beds.

7 Asking whose turn it is ¿A quién le toca … ? Ejemplos:
¿A quién le toca limpiar la cocina? Whose turn is it to clean the kitchen? ¿A quién le toca quitar la mesa? Whose turn is it to clear off the table? ¿A quién le toca dar de comer al perro? Whose turn is it to feed the dog? desempolvar los muebles – to dust the furniture
