Forming the Present Subjunctive
To conjugate regular verbs in the Subjunctive mood, start with the “YO” form of the Present tense and then: Drop the “o” from the ending and - For -AR verbs add: -e -emos -es -éis -e -en For –ER and –IR verbs add: -a -amos -as -áis -a -an

Verbs with spelling changes in the YO form in the Present tense retain that change:
Infinitive Present Subjenctive escoger escojo escoja extinguir extingo extinga conocer conozco conozca Stem-changing (‘shoe’) –AR and -ER verbs retain the change inside the ‘shoe’: Pensar piense pensemos pienses penséis piense piensen

Stem-changing –IR verbs retain the stem change inside the ‘shoe’, AND in the ‘nosotros’ and ‘vosotros’ forms have a change either e>ie (for e>ie verbs); e>I (for e>I verbs); or o>u (for o>ue) verbs. Sentir (e>ie) sienta sintamos sientas sintáis sienta sientan Pedir (e>i) pida pidamos pidas pidáis pidan pidan

Dormir (o>ue) duerma durmamos duermas durmáis duerma duerman For verbs ending in “uir” add a “y” to eliminate the “i” between two vowels: Destruir – to destror destruya destruyamos destruyas destruyáis destruya destruyan

There are six irregular verbs in the Present Subjunctive, think of the word DISHES :

The Subjunctive mood is used in a subordinate clause when there is a change of subject, in certain circumstances: John hopes to go to the party. John espera ir a la fiesta. John hopes (that) Mary goes to the party. John espera que Mary vaya a la fiesta. Luisa doubts (that) Mary will go to the party. Luisa duda que Mary vaya a la fiesta.
