Past Simple - uses Completed single action in the past. I studied English yesterday Past state that is now finished. I lived in Florida in 1999. Repeated actions in the past. We went to the beach every day.

6 THERE WAS / THERE WERE THERE WAS is the past tense of THERE IS. It is only used in singular: There was a student in the room. THERE WERE is the past tense of THERE ARE. It is only used in plural: There were many students in the room.

7 Regular Verbs Regular verbs form the past tense adding –ed: He played the guitar yesterday. They travelled to Brazil by plane. She studied three different languages at school.

8 When a verb ends in -e we only add -d
Regular Verbs When a verb ends in -e we only add -d like  liked (gustar) Invite  invited (invitar) One-syllable verbs ending in a vowel + consonant, we double the consonant and add -ed stop  stopped (parar) hug  hugged (abrazar)

9 Regular verbs Verbs ending in -y
If there is a vowel before –y we add -ed: play  played (jugar, tocar) stay  stayed (quedarse) obey obeyed (obedecer) But… say  said (decir) pay  paid (pagar) If there is a consonant, we drop the -y and we add -ied: study  studied (estudiar) cry  cried (llorar, gritar)

13 We use the auxiliary to form the negative
DID + not + infinitive verb DIDN’T + infinitive verb He didn’t go to Paris. I didn’t break the window. She did not want to go there again.

14 Interrogative We make questions using DID / DIDN’T before the subject + infinitive: Did you study English? Did she write the letter?

15 The interrogative pronoun goes before the auxiliary.
Question forms The interrogative pronoun goes before the auxiliary. Interrogative Pronoun + Auxiliary Subject Infinitive verb Complement ? What did she eat yesterday ? Where you study English ?

16 Question forms Questions with TO BE
To make questions with the verb TO BE, we put the subject after the verb: Was he at the meeting? Were there any messages for me?

17 Questions with a modal verb
Question forms Questions with a modal verb To make a question with a modal verb, we put the subject after the verb: Can I see you now? Would you like a coffee? Should I stay or should I go?
