¿Cómo saludas a la familia? ¿Cómo les dirás de alguna alergia que tienes? ¿Cuándo les puedes dar los regalos? ¿Cómo les dices qué comida te gusta? ¿Qué preguntas puedes hacer para empezar las conversaciones con los padres u otros hermanos? ¿Cómo puedes preguntarles cómo funciona el baño/vater/servicio?

3 Durante las fallas…. Si no sabes ni a dónde vas ni con quién, pregúntale a tu español- necesitan comunicarte la información Si te pierdes, ¿qué puedes hacer? Si te ofrecen alcohol, ¿qué puedes decirles? Si te sientes cansado, incómodo o necesitas algo, ¿cómo se lo puedes comunicar a tu español?

As you prepare, please refer to Ms Wiegner’s website for last minute questions and Ms Nemec’s checklist Bring your suitcase and passport on March 10th to school. I will store them. Your parents should be at school no later than 3pm to leave to go to the airport. THERE IS NO BUS THAT WILL TAKE US TO THE AIRPORT- who made this up?????

After they were here, did they change? How? What are the perceptions that people might have of Americans? (regardless of their validity or accuracy)

10 Choices that will enhance your experience abroad…
First, fight the urge to retreat and join the group activities and outings. Mixing, meeting new people and forcing yourself to become part of the community will help you. Initiate conversations with your student or their family members. Don’t always wait for them to ask you questions. Offer to help out in the house! It’s only a week and a few days….and this is a rare and valuable opportunity you’ve been given….so, take advantage of it!

11 Las Fallas An annual festival that ends on “Dia de San José” March 19th. (aka Father’s Day) All year, groups that are called “Fallas” (similar to the clubs for the Mummer’s) work to build monument structures that are satirical and critical of society. All monuments (called “Fallas”) are then judged and awarded prizes. “Ninots” are miniature monuments that also win prizes. Other activities such as the: desperta, mascleta, crema, desfile de flores, etc are part of the celebrations leading up to the 19th. (the crema is on the night of the 19th)
