2 Subjunctive vs. Indicative
Indicative: actual events or facts Subjunctive: what a person does or doesn’t want, tell, or recommend someone else do. In general, the subjunctive refers to things that are doubtful or that may or may not happen.

3 Forming the subjunctive
Drop the “o” from the yo form and add the endings. For –ar verbs, add these endings HABLAR (to talk; speak) hable hablemos hables habléis hable hablen

4 For –er/-ir verbs, drop the “o” from the yo form and add the following endings
comer (to eat) coma comamos comas comáis coma coman

6 Subjunctive of stem-changing verbs
Stem-changing –ar and –er verbs have stem changes in all but nosotros and vosotros forms. pueda podamos puedas podáis pueda puedan

Stem changing –ir verbs have stem changes in all forms but nosotros and vosotros AND they change ei or ou in nosotros and vosotros DORMIR (to sleep) duerma durmamos duermas durmáis duerma duerman

8 Subjunctive of –car, -gar, and -zar
The subjunctive form reflects the changes of the yo form preterite. explique paguemos empiece* Note that empezar takes both the stem-change and the spelling change.

12 Uses of the subjunctive
As negative tú commands, Usted and Ustedes commands ¿Recuerdas? No hables Hable Ud. Hablen Uds.

13 OFTEN (but not always) a sentence that includes the subjunctive has two parts connected by “que.”
