3 The first years of school Los primeros años de escuela
In LAUSD, we have 3 early grade levels: Transitional Kindergarten Expanded (ETK) Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Kindergarten (Kinder) En LAUSD, tenemos 3 primeros niveles de grado: Kínder Transicional Expandido (ETK) Kínder Transicional (TK) Kínder All grade levels are full day programs and follow the regular classroom. All are taught by fully credentialed teachers.

Focus is on school readiness skills. Learn to work with other students and adults -Average Daily Attendance from state, averages $30 per student per day. Pays for running a school: teachers, custodians, office staff, etc.

TK is the first year of a two Kindergarten program In 2010, the state changed Kinder enrollment birthdate to on or before September 1. 8 Going to school everyday is important!
First grade is a critical period in your child's education. It is a pivotal grade in which the foundation for the rest of the primary grades is set. In first grade your child will become more independent and learn how to adapt to the school's routine. El primer grado es critico en la educación de su hijo/a. Students with Proficient or Advanced school attendance are much more likely to succeed in school and to graduate. -Talk about LAUSD LCAP goal of reducing chronic and increasing proficient -Talk about the AIP program, goal increase by 5% in Kinder and 9th grade because these are the two grade levels in LAUSD that have the hardest time meeting the 96% attendance goal -96%=more likely to achieve at grade level and graduate based on national research. -LAUSD has a 180 day school year, so 96%= 7 or fewer absences. -Refer to attendance band handout -Chronic attendance means missing 15+ days Estudiantes con asistencia escolar Proficiente o avanzada tienen más posibilidades de tener éxito en la escuela y graduarse.

10 Chronic Absence is Especially Challenging for Low-Income Children Ausencias crónicas son especialmente problemáticas par los niños de bajos recursos económicos Only 17% of low-income children in the United States read proficiently by 4th grade. (NAEP 2009) The impact of absences on literacy is 75% worse for low- income children, whose families often lack resources to make up lost time on task. (Ready 2010) Kindergarten and 1st grade can reduce the achievement gap for low-income vs. middle class students, but only if they attend school regularly. 17 How to help your child maintain interest in school: Como ayudarle a su hijo/a a mantenerse interesado en sus estudios: Talk to your child about going to school every day, on-time and ready to learn. Keep in touch with your child’s teacher all year long. Share telephone numbers and addresses. Reinforce everything that’s being taught at school on a daily basis. Make homework a daily routine. Hable con el/ella sobre la importancia de ir a la escuela todos los días y a tiempo. Manténgase en contacto con el maestro de su hijo/a. Intercambie números de celulares o correos electrónicos si es posible. Re-afirme diariamente todo lo que se esta enseñando en el escuela. Haga de el hacer la tarea parte de su rutina. -Talk about the importance of school and regular attendance. Refer to the school calendar-parents can plan vacations and appointments around the calendar. -Team up with other parents to get students to school in case of emergency. Have a plan B, C, D… -Make sure the school has your most update phone numbers throughout the school year

18 How to help your child maintain interest in school: Como ayudarle a su hijo/a a mantenerse interesado en sus estudios: Spend time with your children. Ask them what they learned in school that day. Help your child solve problems with peers by keeping a neutral stance. Convey your trust in his/her ability to solve the problem. Pase tiempo con su hijo/a todos los días y pregúntele que fue lo que aprendió en la escuela ese día. Ayúdele a resolver problemas que el/ella haya tenido con sus compañeros manteniéndose neutrales y diciéndole que usted confía en que el/ella lo resolverá de una manera que le ayude a todos. -Talk to your child about what they learn at school, don’t give up when they say nothing because they did something
