1 Learning Target We are learning to conjugate –ar verbs. Success Criteria I can identify what an –ar verb is and how to conjugate it.

3 Los verbos There are three types of verbs in Spanish:
-ar verbs -er verbs -ir verbs How do you know whether a verb is an –ar verb, -er verb or –ir verb? Simply look at the end of the infinitive. The last two letters of the infinitive will classify the verb for you!

5 -AR Verbs We will begin our study of –ar verbs today.
By following a few easy steps, we can easily conjugate an –ar verb for any subject.

6 –ar verbs in the present tense
1. Take an –ar verb How about comprar (to buy)? 2. Chop off the –ar to get the stem comprar The stem is: compr 3. Take the stem and add the endings (Yo) compro (Tú) compras (Él/Ella) compra (Usted) compra (Nosotros) compramos (Nosotras) compramos (Ellos/Ellas) compran (Ustedes) compran

8 –ar verbs in the present tense (another way of looking at it is here)
subject + stem + ending I You (fam.) He/she, You (form.) We You (pl) They Yo Tú Él/Ella, Usted Nosotros, Nosotras Ustedes Ellos/Ellas Take off the –ar For example: hablar stem=habl - o - as - a - amos - an + + In Spanish, you don’t usually use the subject. The verb ending tells you who is doing an action so it’s REALLY important to get the ending right!
