2 What is the function of a DOP? A direct object tells who or what receives the action of the verb. It can be either a person or a thing Ex.1: Elena pegó a Pablo. “Pablo” receives the action (who-person) Ex.2: Pablo pegó la pelota. “la pelota” receives the action (what-thing)

3 Direct Object Pronouns In English, we often talk about things in general terms. To avoid repetition, we replace the words with direct object pronouns, such as him, her, it and them. -Do you eat breakfast every morning? Yes, I eat it. -¿Comes el desayuno cada mañana? Sí, yo lo como. We can do the same thing in Spanish.

5 To replace the name of a thing, use the following Direct Object Pronouns: SingularPlural lo (it-masculine) la (it-feminine) los (them-masc) las (them-fem)

8 Three things to remember! 1.Used to avoid repeating a direct object noun. 2.In Spanish, the direct object pronoun (DOP) must match the noun it replaces- masculine or feminine, singular or plural! 3.In Spanish, the direct object pronoun comes immediately before the verb! **Just like reflexive pronouns, if (and only IF) you have 2 verbs, it can go before the 2 verbs OR attached to the infinitive (second verb). NEVER between the 2 verbs. (Subject) + DOP + Verb(s)

9 **Take the following steps:** 1.Find the verb Ex. I open the door. Yo abro la puerta. 2. Ask what (qué) + verb? What do I open? Qué abro? 3. Answer = DON (direct object noun) the door = DON la puerta =DON 4. Replace the DON with the DOP DOP = it DOP = la 5. Put DOP before the verb. I open it. Yo la abro.

10 More examples... 1. I bought the book. = I bought it. Yo compré el libro. = Yo lo compré. 2. I have the shoes. = I have them. Yo tengo los zapatos. = Yo los tengo. 3. I need the green skirt. = I need it. Yo necesito la falda verde. = Yo la necesito. 4. She wants the magazines. = She wants them. Ella quiere las revistas. = Ella las quiere. 5. I see you. Yo te veo. 6. Did you return the book to the library? Yes, I returned it. ¿Devolviste el libro a la biblioteca? Sí, lo devolví.
