3 This week our class will be focusing on the different ways people attempt to get the things they need. We will discuss the businesses in a community, such as banks, and how they may serve the needs of the people. Comprehension: sequence Your child will read a story about a girl’s special birthday celebration. Then he or she will order sentences to show the sequence of events in the story. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing. Word Workout Words to Know: sentence clues You will say a sentence and have your child complete it with the correct vocabulary word. Spelling/Phonics: short vowels Show the word list to your child. Give him or her one minute to spell as many words as he or she can. Then do it again! Please, return all Star Reading Letters signed by Friday. Create flashcards by writing each word on an index card or slip of paper. Practice them with your child. 2. Make up a sentence using a word on the list, but say “blank” in place of the spelling word. Have your child pick the word that completes the sentence by saying the word and spelling it. 3. Say a word on the list and have your child spell it. Then ask your child to say a word that rhymes with the word just spelled. Have your child write a short two-line poem with one of the pairs of rhyming words.

6 Hello my Rock Stars! I hope you are ready for a year filled with fun and excitement as we rock it out through learning! I hope you are having an awesome summer! I’m so excited that you will be in my homeroom for 5 th grade. Don’t forget to mark BCES’s Open House on your calendar for August 5 th from 5:00-6:30 PM. Using the same routine each and every day establishes a routine for the students and clearly defines expectations for success. A typical class period looks like this: Mini-lessons: Whole Group 5-10 mins Workshop: Small group/Pairs/Independent 20 mins Reflection: Debrief/Exit Slip 5-10 mins Project-Based Learning Students in my homeroom will be learning about social studies (history, civics, geography, and economics) and science using project-based learning. Students will be expected throughout the school year to complete several projects in and out of the classroom and with or without partners/ groups.
