The time

 ¿Qué hora es? What time is it?  Es la.../Son las… It is…o’clock To say at what time something happens use:  ¿A qué hora es…? At what time is…?  A la(s)… At…o’clock  …de la mañana…in the morning (am)  …de la tarde…in the afternoon (pm)  …de la noche…at night (pm)  La horahour; time  El minutominute  El mediodíanoon (12pm)  La medianochemidnight (12am)

 Use es la when referring to “one o’clock” and use son las when referring to all other hours.  Es la una.It is one o’clock.  Son las dos. It is two o’clock.  Son las cinco.It is five o’clock.  La and las are used before the hour because they refer to “la hora” (fem).

 Use “y cuarto” (a quarter) to show 15 minutes. “Y cuarto” is used because if you divide the 60 minutes in quarters, one quarter equals 15.  1:15Es la una y cuarto  2:15Son las dos y cuarto  4:15Son las cuatro y cuarto  4 = 1/4 4 = cuatro ¼ = cuarto

 Use y + minutes for the number of minutes after the hour (up to 29).  1:05Es la una y cinco  1:13Es la una y trece  2:10Son las dos y diez  7:16 Son las siete y dieciseis  9:20Son las nueve y veinte  11:29Son las once y veintinueve

 So far, you have learned that minutes :01 through :30 are added with “y” to la hora.  :01 to :14 addy + minutes  :15addy cuarto  :16 to :29add y + minutes  :30addy media  Minutes :31to :59 are going to be subtracted with “menos” (minus) from the next hour.  2:40Son las tres menos veinte. It is like saying: It is 3 o’clock minus 20 min.  Ask yourself how many more minutes are needed to reach the next hour.

 3:40 will be the same as saying it is twenty minutes until four o’clock or four o’clock minus twenty minutes (Son las cuatro menos veinte)  5:50 It is ten minutes until six o’clock or six o’clock minus ten minutes.(Son las seis menos diez)  8:35 It is twenty five minutes until nine o’clock or nine o’clock minus twenty five minutes (Son las nueve menos veinticinco)  Do the following exercises  9:49am  10:29pm  7:15pm  6:30pm
