To describe people doing things for themselves, use reflexive verbs. Examples of reflexive actions are brushing one’s teeth or combing one’s hair.

A verb is reflexive when the subject and the object are the same. I wash myself. subject: I verb: wash object: myself Since the subject and object are the same, the verb is reflexive. I wash the car. subject: I verb: wash object: car Since the subject and object are different, the verb is not reflexive.

Remove the ending –se. Use the appropriate reflexive pronoun and conjugate the verb in the present tense. me lavo nos lavamos te lavasos laváis se lavase lavan

When there is no reflexive pronoun, the person doing the action does not receive the action.

Direct Object Pronouns menos teos lo/lalos/las The object that directly receives the action of the verb is called the direct object. Bill hit the ball. “Ball” receives the action of the verb “hit.” The direct object can also be a person. Sherry hit Bill. (DO=Bill) The direct object answers the question “what?” or “whom?” with regard to what the subject of the sentence is doing.

While the usual direct object is different from the subject, a reflexive pronoun is the same person, place or thing as the subject. Me escondo I’m hiding (myself). The subject (yo) and the direct object (me) are the same person; you call this object reflexive.

A verb used reflexively tells you that only the subject of the verb is involved in the action. When using a reflexive verb in the infinitive form, attach the pronoun to the infinitive. Vamos a pelearnos por el cuaderno. We are going to fight over the notebook.

You take a bath. Tu ____bañas. María washes her hair. María _____lava el pelo. They sit down. Ellos______sientan. We brush our teeth. Nosotros_____cepillamos los dientes.

Maria washes her hair. (lavarse) María se______ el pelo. We take a bath. (bañarse) Nos___________. They brush their teeth. (cepillarse) Ellos se_________ los dientes.
