5A – El pretérito y el imperfecto Using 2 past tenses together in one sentence

preterite / preterite Use 2 preterite verbs together when stating simple facts which occured at a defined time period in the past. Anoche, fuimos al cine y vimos una película. Last night, we went to the movies and we saw a film.

imperfect / imperfect Use 2 imperfect verbs together when expressing simultaneous ongoing actions in the past. Sudábamos mientras corríamos. We were sweating while we were running.

imperfect / preterite Use an imperfect verb in the first clause and a preterite verb in the second clause when expressing an ongoing action that was interrupted. Comíamos en el restaurante cuando Pablo entró. We were eating at the restaurant when Pablo entered.

preterite / imperfect Same as imperfect / preterite, just reverse the order of the information. Ella me llamó por teléfono cuando tomábamos el examen. She called me on the phone when we were taking the test.

The verbs hay, había, and hubo. hay = there is, there are Hay muchos alumnos en la clase hoy. hubo = there was, there were (at a defined time in the past) Ayer hubo un almuerzo fantástico en la cafetería. había = there was, there were (at an broader, undefined time in the past, or as an ongoing action) Había muchos jóvenes franceses en la universidad.
