How would you spell the following word out loud in Spanish? Abuelito

What are they? Person Place Thing Idea

In Spanish, unlike in English, every noun has a gender. femininemasculine With words describing people this does tend to match up with the gender of the person (so “mujer” is feminine while “hombre” is masculine. However, most words don’t line up that way. It is just a gramatical thing, not a gender thing like we think of it. Example: dress (vestido) is masculine even though women wear dresses, not men.

There aren’t totally set rules for telling gender in Spanish – to some extent you just need to memorize it until you get to the point where it will become second nature over time so you don’t need to even hardly think about it. (Hint: Memorize with the “el” and “la”) HOWEVER, there are certain endings to word that TEND to tell you gender. We don’t call these “rules” because there are quite a few exceptions and Spanish grammar rules don’t usually.

Son las 12 (12 o’clock partners) I’m going to split the nouns from your vocab onto 2 slides (feminine and masculine). See what tendencies you notice. What endings often work with feminine and what works with masculine? Do you see any exceptions to these “rules”?

Autobús Chico Conductor Cuaderno Día Diario Diccionario Hombre Lápiz Mapa Número País Pasajero Problema Profesor Programa video

Chica Computadora Comunidad Conductora Conversación Cosa Escuela Foto(grafía) Lección Maleta Mano Mujer Nacionalidad Palabra Pasajera Profesora

-o El chico -or El conductor -ista El turista -ma El programa -s (but not plural) El autobús

-a La chica -ora La conductora -ista La turista -ción La conversación -dad La comunidad

La foto – notice that this doesn’t seem to follow the rules but it is short for “fotografía” so really it does! El día La mano El mapa

I’m going to give you some words we haven’t used yet. From their endings I want you to guess if they would be feminine or masculine.
