Capítulo 7A Saying what is happening: The Present Progressive Tense

Present Participle The present participle is the –ing form of the verb. It is formed by removing the infinitive ending of the verb: hablar > habl- Then add the correct present participle ending: habl- > hablando = speaking

Present Participles -ar verbs: hablar – hablando = speaking -er verbs: comer – comiendo = eating -ir verbs: vivir – viviendo = living * There are only 2 endings: -ando and - iendo ( -er and –ir verbs are alike)

Give the present participles for the following infinitives pensar pensando thinking buscar buscando looking for

salir saliendo leaving / going out poner poniendo putting

dibujar dibujando drawing ver viendo seeing

alquilar alquilando renting escribir escribiendo writing

nadar nadando swimming comprender comprendiendo understanding

jugar jugando playing tocar tocando playing

Irregular present participles dormir durmiendo sleeping sentir sintiendo feeling, regretting

Irregular present participles decir diciendo saying, telling leer leyendo reading

Irregular present participles oír oyendo hearing poder pudiendo being able

Irregular present participles traer trayendo bringing venir viniendo coming

You can identify an irregular present participle in the dictionary: Example: dormir(ue,u) The second vowel in the parenthesis indicates the irregularity. * durmiendo

But you cannot use a present participle alone in a sentence. Yo jugando al béisbol I playing baseball. - Incorrect

You need a helping verb. I am playing baseball This is called the present progressive tense. It expresses action in progress presently or actions going on right now. But how are we going to express am in the above sentence?

Put it together: Estoy dibujando I am drawing Estás comiendo You are eating Está saliendo He, she, is leaving or you (polite) are leaving

Estamos apagando We are turning off Estáis poniendo You are putting Están viviendo They / you are living

Give the correct present progressive tense for each verb Vivir (yo) Estoy viviendo I am living Comer (nosotros) Estamos comiendo We are eating

Patinar (ella) Está patinando She is skating Comer (tú) Estás comiendo You are eating

Salir (Uds) Están saliendo You are leaving Estudiar (vosotros) Estáis estudiando You are studying

Bailar (Juanita) Está bailando Juanita is dancing Hacer (Los muchachos) Están haciendo The boys are doing

Part II – Using the present progressive tense with direct object pronouns me te lo la nos os los las

I am renting it. Estoy alquilándolo. or Lo estoy alquilando He is reading them El está leyéndolos.

They are writing it. Están escribiéndolo We are helping them. Estamos ayudándolas. She is watching it. Está mirándolo.

You are studing them. Estás estudiándolos. Juan is buying it. Juan está comprándola. You all are seeing it. Están/Estáis viéndolo.

Part II – Using the present progressive tense with indirect object pronouns me te le nos os les

I am writing to him. Estoy escribiéndole. or Le estoy escribiendo He is reading to them É l está leyéndoles. or les está leyendo.

Indirect before direct. I am renting it for us. Estoy alquilándonoslo. or Nos lo estoy alquilando He is reading them to me. É l está leyéndomelos. Estamos dándoleslo. Estamos dándoselo. or Se lo estamos dando Change le and les to se before lo, la, los, las.
