To tell the time in Spanish, you say either: “Es la una” or “Son las (# 2 – 12)”. That means “It is ____ o’ clock.”
After you say the hour, you say “and ____ (number of minutes).” For example, 4:25 would be “Son las cuatro y veinte cinco.”
To say “ :15”, you say, “y cuarto” (It is close to the word “cuatro” but two letters are reversed. “Cuarto” means quarter, because 15 minutes is one quarter of an hour. You could also just say “y quince”. = Son las dos y cuarto. or = Son las dos y quince.
To say “ :30”, you say, “y media” “Media” means half, because 30 minutes is one half of an hour. You could also just say “y treinta”. = Son las seis y media. or = Son las seis y treinta.
To say anything after :30, you have two choices…. The easy choice is just to say “y (# of minutes).” = Son las cinco y cuarenta y cinco.
The more difficult choice is to say the NEXT hour minus how many minutes are left to get there. For example, if it is 3:50, that means there are 10 more minutes to get to the next hour – 4:00. So you would say, “Son las cuatro menos diez.) = Son las cinco y cuarenta y cinco. OR Son las seis menos cuarto/menos quince.
(morning) = de la mañana (afternoon) = de la tarde (night) = de la noche
