REFLEXIVE VERBS IN SPANISH Pregunta esencial: How do I use relfexive verbs with their pronouns to talk about what people do for themselves.

English Grammar Connection Reflexive verbs describe what actions are done to or for oneself In English, reflexive pronouns end in – self or –selves and show that the subject both does and agrees with the action of the verb. Ejemplos: I wash myself. They dresses themselves.

Reflexive verbs in Spanish We already know that all verbs end in –ar/ -er/ -ir, but reflexive verbs add a little something extra In Spanish, all reflexive verbs are expressed with a reflexive pronoun To tell if a verb is reflexive, the infinitive form will have the reflexive pronoun attached to the end. Ejemplo: bañarse – to bath oneself

The Reflexive Pronouns When you CONJUGATE the reflexive verb, the reflexive pronoun comes BEFORE the conjugated verb. The Pronouns Yo MeNos Nosotros Tú TeOs Vosotros Él/ Ella Se Usted Se Ellos/as Ustedes

What does that look like? Bañarse- To take a bath/ to bathe oneself Me baño I take a bath Nos bañamos We take abath Te bañas You take a bath Os bañáis You all take a bath Se baña He/She/You take a bath Se bañan They/ You all take a bath Recuerdas: This is saying that someone (I, you, Mark, Dan, etc. do an action to THEMSELVES)

Ejemplos: 1. Me duermo a las diez. I fall asleep at ten. 2. Ellos se peinen el pelo. They brush their hair. 3. Nosotras nos maqulliamos. We put on make up. ** Notice how these are all things that you can do to yourself.

Práctica 1. Ellos/ secarse 2. Yo/ despertarse 3. Ramona y yo/ acostarse 4. Ella/ lavarse 5. Miguel / afeitarse 1.Ellos se secan 2.Me despierto 3.Nos acostamos 4.Ella se lava 5.Miguel se afeita

Reflexive Verbs after another Conjugated Verb Sometimes, you will use a reflexive verb after an already conjugated verb. Ejemplo: I want to shower in the morning. There are TWO options on where to put the reflexive pronoun. 1.Yo me quiero duchar en la mañana. 2.Yo quiero ducharme en la mañana. ***Both are grammatically correct and exchangeable.**

Attach the Pronoun The first way to use a reflexive verb after a conjugated one, is to add the reflexive pronoun to the infinitive. Ejemplo: ¿A qué horas quieres despertarte? At what time do you want to wake up? Yo prefiero dormirme temprano. I prefer to fall asleep early. NOTA: The reflexive pronoun still changes based on who is doing the action.

Before the Conjugated Verb The other way, is to place the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb. Ejemplo: Me quiero depertar a las siete I want to wake up at 7. Le piensa maquillar en el coche. She plans to put her makeup on in the car. NOTA: When the verb pensar (to think) is used before an infinitive, it means to plan, or to plan on.

Práctica Yo/ necesitar/ bañarse –Yo me necesito bañar. –Yo necesito bañarme. Ella / pensar / lavarse el pelo –Ella se piensa lavar el pelo –Ella piensa lavarse el pelo. Nosotros / preferir / afeitarse. –Nosotros nos preferimos afeitar. –Nosotros preferimos afeirtarnos Ellos / querer/ cepillarse los dientes –Ellos se quiernen cepillar los dientes –Ellos quieren cepillarse los dientes.

Are Reflexive Verbs ALWAYS Reflexive? The short answer… NO! We have seen the verb dormir which means “to sleep” before in our vocabulary. Now we have the verb dormirse. The meaning when reflexive changes to “to fall asleep” Otros ejemplos: –Yo despierto a Jaxon a las siete. I wake up Jaxon at 7. –Yo me despierto a las siete. I wake (myself) up at 7.
