Los verbos: interesar; aburrir; gustar/(encantar) Capítulo 5

No, el béisbol me interesa. ¿Te aburre el béisbol? Does baseball bore you? No, el béisbol me interesa. No, baseball interests me. The verbs interesar and aburrir function the same in English and in Spanish.

Gustar conveys the meaning to like, but its true meaning is to please. The Spanish way of saying I like baseball is Baseball pleases me. Me gusta el béisbol. I like baseball. (Baseball pleases me). The verb gustar in Spanish functions the same as interesar and aburrir.

When using interesar, aburrir, and gustar/encantar you will only use the (3) él, ella, usted and (6) ellos, ellas, ustedes forms. Also, use me instead of yo and te instead of tú (me/te will stay in front of the verb; never sepearate it!) Me gusta el béisbol. I like baseball. Te interesa el béisbol. Baseball interests you. Me aburre el béisbol. Baseball bores me.

When talking about me and you: Mí and ti are used after a preposition: a mí and a ti. You will frequently use a mí and a ti to add emphasis when talking about me or you (infor). A mí me gusta. ¿A ti también? Sí, a mí también. A mí no me gusta. ¿Y a ti? No. A mí tampoco.

Me interesa el béisbol, pero me aburre el tenis. Use the (3) él, ella, Ud. form of the verb when talking about singular nouns. Me interesa el béisbol, pero me aburre el tenis. Baseball interests me, but tennis bores me. Te gusta el fútbol. You like soccer.

Use the (6) ellos, ellas, Uds. form when talking about plural nouns. Me gustan las zapatillas azules. I like blue sneakers. ¿Te gustan los deportes? Do you like sports? Sí, me gustan todos. Yes, I like all.

When using gustar, interesar, and aburrir with a noun you MUST use the definite article: el, la, los, las Me gustan las zapatillas azules. ¿Te gustan los deportes? Me interesa el béisbol, pero me aburre el tenis.

Gustar is often used with an infinitive to tell what you like to do. Encantar is used the same way as gustar only that it means to LOVE something versus just like. Use the (3) él, ella, usted form when using an infinitive. ¿Te gusta ganar? Do you like to win? Sí, no me gusta perder. Yes, I don’t like to lose. Summarize: How are interesar, aburrir, and gustar different from other verbs? What subjects do you use with them ?
