J UANA, LA LOCA Juana de Castilla (6 November 1479 – 12 April 1555), known as Juana la Loca (‘the Mad’), was heiress of the Kingdoms of Castilla and Aragón, a union which evolved into modern Spain. She married Felipe I, known as Felipe el Hermoso (‘the handsome’), the son of Holy Roman EmperorMaximilian I. L OS REYES CATÓLICOS The Catholic Monarchs is the joint title used in history for la reina Isabel de Castilla and el rey Fernando de Aragón. Their marriage united both crowns under the same family. Castilla and Aragón remained largely separate entities for decades to come. The court of Fernando and Isabel was constantly on the move, in order to bolster local support for the crown from local feudal lords.

L OS HIJOS DE LOS R EYES C ATÓLICOS Isabel. In 1490 Isabella married Afonso, Prince of Portugal. He dies. In 1497 she was persuaded to marry Manuel I of Portugal, Afonso's uncle. In 1498, Isabella herself died while giving birth to Miguel da Paz, who was heir to the thrones of Castile and Portugal until his death in 1500.Afonso, Prince of PortugalManuel I of PortugalMiguel da Paz Juan. In 1496 he married Philip's sister (his sister Juana’s husband), Margaret of Austria. It was a good marriage and Juan was devoted to Margaret. Although it was a political alliance, it was a deep love match. On the 4 October 1497 he died of tuberculosis. Two months later, Margaret gave birth a dead baby.

Her eldest sister Isabel, was the first wife of Manuel I of Portugal, but her death in 1498 created a necessity for Manuel to remarry; Maria became the next bride of the Portuguese king, reaffirming dynastical links with Spanish royal houses. Catalina. She was three years old when she was betrothed to Prince Arthur, heir apparent to the English throne. They married in 1501, but Arthur died five months later.
