Los verbos reflexivos

Reflexive constructions In Spanish, if the subject and the object of the phrase are the same person (e.g., I wash myself, They wash themselves) a reflexive construction is needed.

A reflexive construction Antonia se mira en el espejo.

A non-reflexive construction Luego, ella mira la televisión.

Reflexive pronouns menos teosse

Reflexive pronouns must agree in number and person with the subject yo me visto tú te vistes él, ella, Ud. se viste nosotros nos vestimos vosotros os vestís ellos, ellas, Uds. se visten

Reflexive pronouns, like direct and indirect object pronouns, are placed before a conjugated verb. Fabio se peina.

The reflexive pronoun can be attached to an infinitive... Fabia va a peinarse ahora. (Fabia se va a peinar ahora.)

... or a present participle. Estoy lavándome los dientes. (Me estoy lavando los dientes.)

Reflexive pronouns, like object pronouns, must be attached to an affirmative command... Enrique, ¡aféitate! ¡Tienes mucha barba!

... but are placed before a negative command. Enrique, ¡ no te bañes todavía! ¡Solamente hay agua fría!

Many verbs can be used either in reflexive or non-reflexive constructions. Los amigos se lavan.(reflexive)

A non-reflexive construction. A Mario le gusta lavar el carro / Le gusta lavarlo. (direct object)

The reflexive pronouns can also be used to express reciprocal actions (each other, one another). Raúl y Margarita se quieren mucho.

Reflexive or not? 1. Niños, ¡acuéstense ya! 2. Tengo que bañar a mi perro. 3. ¿Dónde nos sentamos? 4. La peluquera me arregla muy bien el pelo. 5. Julia despierta a sus hijos temprano. 6. ¿No vas a secar tu ropa? 7. No quiero levantarme temprano. 8. ¿Qué me pongo para ir a la fiesta? 9. Pues, póngase el vestido nuevo. 10. Ponga los libros allí, por favor.
