In Spanish all nouns have a gender. They are either Masculine Feminine

Sustantivos (Nouns)

So how do we know which nouns are masculine and which ones are feminine?

Most masculine nouns end with -o El cuaderno El bolígrafo El libro El diccionario

Most feminine nouns end with -a La calculadora La computadora La regla La tarea La crayola

What about nouns that end in letters other than -o and -a

You can also tell the gender of the word by identifying the gender of the article The = el, los, la, las

Masculine Articles el los

Feminine Articles la las

-If the article that accompanies the noun is el or los then the noun is Masculine Ejemplo: El marcador El papel El pizarrón El pupitre El lápiz El reloj

-If the article that accompanies the noun is la or las then the noun is feminine Ejemplo: la clase la lección

Also there are some feminine words that end with -dad La universidad -ciónLa lección

Also there are words that end with -a that are masculine such as el mapa

-Nouns that break these rules need to be memorized as to whether they are masculine or feminine. -In general most nouns that end with -o are masculine and most nouns that end with -a are feminine.

Making nouns plurals

the article has to agree with the noun Masculine Masculine singular plural el Los FeminineFeminine singular plural la las

-add an s to words that end in a vowel ejemplo: El diccionarioLos diccionarios

-add an es to words ending in any consonant other than -z Ejemplo: la lección las lecciones

-When a word ends in a -z 1) replace the z with a c 2) add es Ejemplo: el Lapiz los lapices
