What is a Reflexive Verb? A verb is reflexive when the subject (the person doing the action) and the receiver of the action are the same. ¿Qué?

A verb is reflexive when you do something TO YOURSELF or FOR YOURSELF Un Ejemplo: A verb is reflexive when you do something TO YOURSELF or FOR YOURSELF REFLEXIVE! NOT REFLEXIVE! This is not reflexive because Elena is brushing SOMEBODY ELSE’S hair. Elena is doing the action to someone else. This is reflexive because Maria is brushing her OWN hair. Maria is doing the action to herself. Elena peina el pelo de su amiga. Elena brushes her friend’s hair. María se peina el pelo. Maria brushes her hair.

¿Entienden ustedes? Vamos a ver. NOT REFLEXIVE! REFLEXIVE! Eduardo se pone la ropa. Eduardo dresses himself. María pone la ropa a su niña. Maria dresses her child.

¿Reflexivo o no? NOT REFLEXIVE! REFLEXIVE! REFLEXIVE! Ana se cepilla los dientes. Ana brushes her teeth. El oso se despierta. The bear wakes himself up. Juan despierta a su hermano. Juan wakes up his brother.

What do reflexive verbs look like? Reflexive verbs always have “-se” attached to the infinitive. acostarse ducharse afeitarse secarse bañarse ponserse la ropa levantarse arreglarse The “-se” at the end of the infinitive verb is called the reflexive pronoun.

Reflexive Pronouns These are the reflexive pronouns: It is important to memorize the reflexive pronouns because YOU NEED TO USE THEM in order to conjugate a reflexive verb. These are the reflexive pronouns: yo: me tú: te él, ella, se usted nosotros: nos vosotros: os ellos, ellas, se ustedes

secarse (to dry oneself) Conjugation Vamos a conjugar el verbo: secarse (to dry oneself) Now conjugate the verb: ducharse (to shower) Don’t forget the reflexive pronoun! To conjugate a reflexive verb, remember that you need to use the reflexive pronoun first! yo: tú: él, ella, usted nosotros: vosotros: ellos, ellas, ustedes secarse: ducharse: me ducho nos duchamos te duchas os ducháis se ducha se duchan me te se nos os seco secas seca secamos secáis secan Don’t forget the reflexive pronouns!

Con el cuerpo When you use reflexive verbs with parts of the body, you use the definite article rather than the possessive adjective. In English we say, I brush MY teeth. En español: Me cepillo LOS dientes.

Otro Ejemplo: Una cosa más: To say: “You are going to get dressed.” you can say EITHER: “Te vas a vestir.” -OR- “Tú vas a vestirte.” Una cosa más: To say: “I have to shower.” you can say EITHER: “Me tengo que duchar.” -OR- “Tengo que ducharme.” ***The reflexive pronoun can either go BEFORE the conjugated verb (tengo) OR it can be ATTACHED TO THE INFINITIVE.
