In Spanish In Spanish we use the subjunctive after expressions of doubt because they suggest that the second verb may be untrue. No creo que la fama sea importante I don’t believe that fame is important.

Here’s how Expression of doubt + que + different subject+ subjunctive. Marta no está segura de que tengamos tiempo para ver la película. Marta is not sure that we have time to see the movie.

Note The word no can change the meaning of an expression and affect whether you need to use the subjunctive or the indicative form of the second verb. Dudamos que Jorge conozca al músico No dudamos que Jorge conoce al músico.

Doubt or Certainty? Dudamos que Jorge conozca al músico We doubt that Jorge knows the musician. This sentence expresses doubt. We use the subjunctive after the “que”.

Doubt or Certainty? No dudamos que Jorge conoce al músico. We do not doubt that Jorge knows the musician. No doubt (certainty), therefore we use the indicative.

Another example Estoy seguro de que el músico tiene talento. I am sure that the musician has talent. This sentence expresses certainty therefore we use the indicative after the “que”.

Another example No estoy seguro de que el músico tenga talento. I am not sure that the musician has talent. This sentence expresses doubt therefore we use the subjunctive after the “que”
