Spanish Stem-Changing Verbs e→ie

How do these verbs work? There are certain groups of verbs in Spanish that have a stem change in the present tense. The verbs empezar (to begin), querer (to want), perder (to lose), and preferir (to prefer) are stem- changing verbs.

What changes is….. The E of the stem changes to IE in all forms except in the form NOSOTROS. The endings ar the same as those of regular verbs (-ar, - er, -ir).

Stem-changing verbs give their stems the boot! That is why they are called “shoe verbs”

Let’s begin with verb Empezar But first, let’s just add all the correct endings.

So, since “querer” (to want) ends en “er” (querer), which endings will we add? The “er” endings: Yo -o Tú -es Él, ella, usted -e Nosotros(as) -emos Ellos, ellas, -en ustedes
