Spanish Stem-Changing Verbs e→ie

How do these verbs work? There are certain groups of verbs in Spanish that have a stem change in the present tense. The verbs empezar (to begin), querer (to want), perder (to lose), and preferir (to prefer) are stem- changing verbs.

What changes is….. The E of the stem changes to IE in all forms except in the form NOSOTROS. The endings ar the same as those of regular verbs (-ar, - er, -ir).

Some verbs that change to e→ie Tener Querer Pensar Empezar Comenzar Perder Preferir To have To want To think To begin (start) To lose To prefer

Stem-changing verbs give their stems the boot! That is why they are called “shoe verbs”

Let’s begin with verb Empezar But first, let’s just add all the correct endings.

Verb endings Subject pronoun - ar-er-ir Yo-o Tú-as-es Él, ella Usted -a-e Nosotros -amos-emos-imos Ellos, ellas Ustedes -an-en

Empezar (to begin) Yo emp zo Nosotros empezamos Tú emp zas Remember the E on the stem changes to IE !! Él Ella emp za Usted Ellos Ellas emp zan Ustedes This is the stem ie

Some practice with Empezar (to begin) El partido empieza a las tres de la tarde. ¿A qué hora empiezan ustedes a jugar? Yo empiezo mi práctica de baloncesto hoy. El otro equipo empieza a ganar. Nosotros empezamos a perder.

So, since “querer” (to want) ends en “er” (querer), which endings will we add? The “er” endings: Yo -o Tú -es Él, ella, usted -e Nosotros(as) -emos Ellos, ellas, -en ustedes

Querer quer oemos e es en Something does not look right…….

Ohh, now let’s add our stem change. Remember, only the e in the stem can change. quer er perd er If there are two e’s in the stem, the second one always changes. prefer ir empez ar

Let’s practice Now let’s change the stems. Remember, e can change to ie only within the boot. This means the nosotros form never changes!

Querer (to want) Yo qu ro Nosotros (as) queremos Tú Qu res Él Ella qu re Usted Ellos Ellas qu ren Ustedes ie

Some practice with Querer Yo quiero ganar el partido de fútbol. Tú quieres jugar al baloncesto. Juan quiere meter un gol en la portería. Nosotros queremos jugar al béisbol. Carlos y Tom quieren ver el fútbol americano.

Prefer ir (to prefer) Yo prefiero Nosotros preferimos Tú prefieres Él Ella prefiere Usted Ellos Ellas prefieren Ustedes This is the stem
