Mark 1: And this is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

10 On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. 11 And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Mark 1: Reflexiones en Marcos 1: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 11, 2015 This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It is an important event in the Life of Christ, because it identified Him for who he is, was, and is to be. It set in motion the plan for our redemption.

Este Domingo celebramos la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor. Es un importante acontecimiento en la Vida de Cristo, porque lo identifica como quien fue, quien es, y quien será. Pone en moción el plan para nuestra redención.

The story before this story is that Jesus lived a hidden life for thirty years. We know little about it except for the incident when he was twelve years old, when he got lost in the Temple. Even there he said “He had to be about his Father’s business.” After that scripture tells us “He grew in wisdom, and age, and grace before God and man” (Luke 2:52).

La historia antes de esta historia es que Jesús vivió una vida escondida por treinta años. Sabemos poco de esto aparte de un incidente a la edad de doce años, cuando se perdió en el Templo. Hasta allí dijo que “Él tenía que andar en los negocios de su Padre.” Después de eso la escritura nos dice que “creció en sabiduría, edad, y gracia ante Dios y los hombres” (Lucas 2:52).

In those thirty years he was like us in all things except in sin. He grew in awareness of who he was with age. There must have been plenty of prayer in his life, with Our Lady and St. Joseph setting the example, and guiding him in his observation of the pious practices of his day.

En esos treinta años fue como nosotros en todo menos en el pecado. Creció en conocimiento de quien era con la edad. Debe haber habido mucha oración en su vida. Nuestra Señora y Buen Señor San José le dieron el ejemplo, y lo guiaron en su observación de las costumbres piadosas de sus días.

He learned how to read and write. We know he knew the Old Testament part of the bible very well, enough to quote it when necessary. So when our lives are hidden in Christ, it is not necessarily a waste of time. We can do the same things Jesus did. We can get ready for the call of the Lord.

Aprendió como leer y escribir. Sabemos que conocía el Antiguo Testamento de la Biblia muy bien, bastante para citarlo cuando necesario. Entonces cuando nuestras vidas están escondidas en Cristo, no necesariamente es malgasto de tiempo. Podemos hacer las mismas cosas que Jesús hizo. Podemos prepararnos para la llamada del Señor.

At the right time, Jesus was called from Galilee into the Jordan River where John the Baptist was preaching. He knew he was supposed to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15) and be baptized by John. John tried to prevent it, but Jesus insisted.

Al tiempo propio, Jesús fue llamado de Galilea al Río Jordán donde andaba Juan bautizando. Él sabía que era necesario que Juan lo bautizara para cumplir todo lo que Dios quería (Mateo 3:15). Juan trató de disuadirlo, pero Jesús insistió.

After Jesus was baptized, he came from the water and the heavens were opened for him, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove and said: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11).

Después de que Jesús fue bautizado, salió de la agua y los cielos se abrieron para Él, y el Espirito Santo descendió sobre Él como una paloma y dijo: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado, yo tengo en ti mis complacencias” (Marcos 1:11).

This event changed many things in a very profound way. He could not go back home to his Mother. Immediately the Spirit led him to the desert to pray, to prepare for his public life. He came back with the power of God. He chose his apostles, and “went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him” (Acts 10:38).

Este acontecimiento cambió muchas cosas de una manera muy profunda. Ya no pudo regresar a la casa con su Madre. Inmediatamente el Espirito lo dirigió al deserto para orar, y prepararse para su vida publica. Regresó con el poder de Dios. Escogió a sus apóstoles, y “anduvo haciendo el bien y sanando a todos los oprimidos por el demonio, porque Dios estaba con él ” (Hechos 10:38).

The earliest Christians constantly went back to this mysterious act of Baptism, which laid the foundation of their new condition. They proclaimed the apostolic eyewitness of the life, death, resurrection and exaltation of the Lord before proceeding to baptize.

Los primeros Cristianos constantemente regresaban a este misterioso acontecimiento de Bautismo que era la fundación de su nueva condición. Antes de bautizar proclamaban el testimonio apostólico de la vida, muerte, resurrección, y exaltación del Señor.

The response of the people was a conversion to faith in the exalted Lord. Then followed baptism in water and the Spirit by an Apostle. After baptism there followed (a) living the teaching, (b) fellowship, and (c) prayers.

El responso del pueblo fue una conversión en fe al Señor exaltado. Luego seguía el bautismo en agua y el Espirito por un Apóstol. Después del bautismo seguía (a) el vivir de la enseñaza, (b) el compañerismo, y (c) la oración.

It is a pledge of things to come, a dying and a rising. Only this renders us fit for a relationship with God. Jesus said: “Unless a man be born anew he shall not enter into the Kingdom of God ” (John 3:3). And in Mark 16:16 he said: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”

Era una promesa de lo que ha de venir: una muerte y una levantada. Solo esto nos rinde dignos para una relación con Dios. Jesús dijo: “Si el hombre no es nacido de nuevo no entrará al reino de Dios” (Juan 3:3). Y en San Marcos 16:16 Jesús dijo: “El que crea y es bautizado será salvado; pero el que no crea será condenado.”

St. Paul says in Romans 6:1-11. “Don’t you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ” This means we have to die to ourselves, so as to live like Jesus. Jesus never looked back and neither should we. He obeyed God unto death. Are we ready to do the same?

San Pablo en Romanos 6:1-11 dice: “¿Qué no saben que todos nosotros que fuimos bautizados en Cristo fuimos bautizados en su muerte? ” Esto quiere decir que hay que morir a sí mismo y vivir como Jesús. Jesús nunca miró hacia atrás y tampoco nosotros debemos hacerlo. Obedeció a Dios hasta la muerte. ¿Estamos listos para hacer lo mismo?”

That is why it makes a lot of sense to learn to live a life worthy of the Lord. This ideally is to be done with the help of a support community (your Church and your family). Believers who pray together, work together, and love one another, are living their baptism daily. Such a community proclaims the word of God to all, like St. John the Baptist did, and are preparing the way of the Lord, as they live their lives liked the first Christians.

Por eso tiene mucho sentido aprender a vivir una vida digna del Señor. Idealmente debe ser con la ayuda de una comunidad que nos sostiene (la iglesia y tu familia). Creyentes que rezan juntos, obran juntos, y se aman unos a los otros, están viviendo su bautismo diariamente. Tales proclaman la palabra de Dios a todos como lo hizo San Juan Bautista. Preparan el camino del Señor, al vivir su vida como los primeros Cristianos.
