International Workshop on Rescue & Digitazion of Climate Records in the Mediterranean Basin November 2007 We have carried out a comprehensive but approximate evaluation of the available long data series in the National Climatological Data Base at INM. The variables studied have been precipitation and temperature, on both the monthly and daily basis. The climatological data series have been stratified by year of beginning (ten year blocks) up to 1960 and approximate percentage of missing data. In order to make the computations easier some simplifications have been used. For example the different stations indicators with the same root have been considered as belonging to the same long series. And there are cases where in a given month there are daily missing data but since the monthly record is present we have not considered the month as missing for daily data. But we estimate these cases to be rather scarce.

International Workshop on Rescue & Digitazion of Climate Records in the Mediterranean Basin November 2007 The activity in the field of generating long homogeneous series at INM has received recently an important boost in connection with a project launched by the Spanish Environment Ministry to generate climate change regional scenarios. Within this project there is a part devoted to climate data which includes the generation of long temperature and precipitation homogeneous series. This part will be coordinated by Univ. Rovira i Virgili, and the Climatology Area of the INM will be one of the partners.

International Workshop on Rescue & Digitazion of Climate Records in the Mediterranean Basin November 2007 Metadata Recently there has been a clear growth in the interest in and demand for metadata by the users of climatological data. There are specifice input screens for metadata in the Climatological Data Base of INM with Oracle system. Currently we are making efforts to recover old metadata, specifically the displacements of stations, which give rise to new station indicators. There are problems due to the sharing of responsabilities in metadata managemente between different units at INM. A new very important challenge is the automatization of the climatological network with the related issues of homogeneity: need of overlap between manual and automatic stations.
