Por or Para? That is the question…

for You might know that these two words mean “for” in English, however… there are some other meanings, as well as many different situations in which you use them. por paraYour goal is to decide when to use por, and when to use para given a certain situation. paraLet’s talk about para first...

Para P. E. R. F. C. T. Here’s what each letter represents:

P  PURPOSE *In order to… ej. Estudio para sacar buenas notas. infinitive (para is followed by an infinitive when used to represent purpose)

E  EMPLOYMENT/USE *Used to express employment ej. Mi padre trabaja para Motorola. *Describing what something is used for ej. Se usa la cuchara para comer. ej. El libro es para leer.

R  RECIPIENT *The person or thing that receives something ej. El regalo es para mi esposo. ej. El dinero es para mi hijo.

F  FUTURE *Used to talk about something that is for the future ej. La tarea es para el viernes. (future due date)

C  COMPARISON *A comparison of a person or thing with others of the same classification. ej. Para un gato, es muy inteligente. ej. Para un niño, es muy grande.

T  TOWARD *Movement toward in terms of direction ej. Yo salgo para México mañana. ej. Vamos para la casa de Lola.

D  DURATION For * “For” a certain amount of time for ej. I’ll be in Spain for 2 weeks. por Estaré en España por 2 semanas. In/During * “In/During” in ej. I’ll see you in the afternoon. por Te veré por la tarde.

M  MANNER/MEANS By *By by por ej. I’ll send them by boat.(por barco) by por ej. I’ll call you by phone.(por teléfono) by por ej. I’ll send it by mail.(por correo)

E  EXCHANGE *For por ej. Vendo la bicicleta por $50. for I’ll sell the bike for $50. *Exchange por ej. ¿Quieres cambiar el cartel por el disco compacto? for Do you want to trade the poster for the CD?

C  CAUSE/MOTIVE *For for por ej. I’ll marry her for love. (por amor) for por ej. I’m going to the store for milk. (por leche) *Because of por ej. I’m worried because of you.(por ti) *On behalf on behalf of por ej. I’ll talk to them on behalf of him.(por él) *For the sake of for the sake of por ej. I’ll do it for the sake of my friends. (por mis amigos)

P  PER *Percent: (por ciento) *Per…:(por hora, por día, por etc…)

T  THANK YOU *To say thank you for something, you always use por. ej. Gracias por el regalo. ej. Gracias por ayudarme.

M  Movement/ General location *By ej. The train will stop by Cary. (por Cary) *Along ej. I like long walks along the beach. (por la playa) *Around ej. Do you want to walk around the city? (por la ciudad) *Through ej. He entered through the window. (por la ventana)

MISC. EXPRESSIONS There are some miscellaneous expressions used with por. ej. por favor, por cierto, por su puesto, etc…

Tengan cuidado. Never use por or para immediately following these verbs: 1. pedir:to ask for 2. pagar:to pay for 3. buscar:to look for 4. esperar:to wait for 5. calentar(ie): to cram for *The “for” is implied in the verb.

En el espacio de p. 27: Decide entre por o para, escríbelo y también escribe la razón.
