To be or not to be? So far we have learned two ways to express the concept of “to be”: ser Estar They are irregular for their conjugations and the difference in their uses based on the context.

Ser Ser - used to talk about essential things (essential ≈ es). T.O.D.O. Think of the acronym T.O.D.O.

Ser (to be – permanent) SoySomos Eres EsSon

Time T.O.D.O. The first letter of T.O.D.O. stands for “time.” When we talk about time in Spanish, we always use ser: ¿Qué hora es? Son las 3:30. Hoy es lunes. Mi clase es a las once y media.

Origin T.O.D.O. The second letter of T.O.D.O. stands for “origin.” We use ser to talk about where people are from & nationality: Mis primos son de Chicago. Marta es venezolana.

Description We can also use ser to identify people: Characteristics (adjectives): Mi casa es grande y cómoda. Mis amigos son divertidos. No me gusta la historia porque es aburrida. Identification: Anita es mi amiga mejor. Las fresas son frutas. Events taking place: La fiesta es el viernes en casa de Juan.

Description/Date Identification cont’d: Identify what something is made out of: Mi casa es de ladrillos. Identify possession (i.e., who owns what): Es mi diccionario. Esta no es mi calculadora. *Date: El partido es el cinco de octubre. Nací el primero de abril de 1991.

Occupation Occupation: Mi padre es ingeniero. Soy estudiante. Sr. Garcia es un buen profesor.

Estar Now we can look at estar. This verb is used to talk about states/conditions (estar ≈ state). P.L.A.C.E. Think of the acronym P.L.A.C.E.

Estar EstoyEstamos Estás Está Están

Position Position - where something is located, whether it is there temporarily… David está en la Florida. Juana no está en clase hoy. Mi abuelo está en casa.

Location … or permanently located: Chicago está en Illinois. La iglesia está en la Avenida Foster. Madrid está en España.

Action Action - actions that are occurring at the moment of speaking ( “present progressive”): Laura está esquiando. Humbero está leyendo para la clase de literatura. Estamos mirando una película.

Condition Condition - temporary states (for example, health): Enrique está enfermo. Mis padres están cansados. ¿Cómo estás?

Emotion Emotion – describe feelings and emotions. Alicia está enfadada. Lorenzo y María están contentos. Estoy nervioso porque tengo un examen de literatura.

Repaso de diferencia When the verb "to be" is followed by a noun, the verb ser is always used; essential characteristics ex: Soy estudiante. When the verb "to be" is followed by an adjective, the verb used depends upon the meaning. When referring to an essential characteristic, use ser. When referring to a state or condition, use estar. ex: Mi padre es alto. ex: La comida está fría.

Repaso de diferencia When the verb "to be" is followed by an adjective, the verb can actually change the meaning of the adjective. El profesor está aburrido. The professor is bored. El profesor es aburrido. The professor is boring.

Fin Let's review: When a noun follows the verb, use ser When an adjective or adverb follows the verb, decide between "essence" and "condition" To tell where something is from, use ser To tell where something is located right now, use estar To tell where an event is taking place, use ser
