John 10:11 - 18 11 Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. 13 This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.

18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.” Gospel of the Lord

Reflexiones en Juan 10:11 - 18 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Apr. 29, 2012 Reflections on John 10:11 - 18 Reflexiones en Juan 10:11 - 18 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Apr. 29, 2012 This is Good Shepherd Sunday. Whenever Jesus uses the words: “I am” he is claiming divinity. That is the name of God given to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). In today’s gospel Jesus uses the model of a shepherd to explain what he, as God, does for us his sheep. He also tells us what he expects good sheep to do.

Jesus tells us a truly good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep Jesus tells us a truly good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. He said this in anticipation of what he was about to do in his passion and death. He could have run away, like a hireling. But he chose to lay down his life on his own. He had the power to lay it down, and he did it freely, voluntarily, of his own free will. In this gospel he also hints at the resurrection that was to follow his death.

All of this says a lot about his character. He was not a coward All of this says a lot about his character. He was not a coward. “He emptied himself of his divinity.” He humbled himself (Philipians 2:7-8). He was brave, and obedient unto death. Jesus our Hero was about to be maltreated, but he foretold that he would come back and share with us the “power of the resurrection” (Philippians 3:10).

“I know mine, and mine know me” (John 10:14), “just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.” Once again, Jesus claims his divinity. He has a special relationship to God as ABBA, Father. It is so intimate that he is One with the Father. He alone has that intimacy, because he alone comes from God. “No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known” (John 1:18). Now he wants to share with us that unity he has with the Father.

With this as background, it is astounding that Jesus wants us to be one with him, just as he is one with the Father. We need not be afraid to Name him, or to use the Holy Name. We can call him in endearing words, like a small child with his father. In John 17:21, Jesus prayed “That they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us.”

This is a call for the unity of the sheep with the Shepherd This is a call for the unity of the sheep with the Shepherd. That is their best defense against the enemy. The wolf will come to test this unity. Saint Peter says “The devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Jesus said: “I made known to them your Name, and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me, may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:26). Jesus does not want us to hesitate to use the Name of God “ABBA, FATHER”. All of this, God the Father has commanded him to say (John 10:18).

If that be the case, it is good to be obedient, it seems to me If that be the case, it is good to be obedient, it seems to me. That is the least I can do. Call on the Father by his Name, and be a good sheep, following Jesus the Good Shepherd. Let us seek the unity among ourselves that Jesus wants for us. The risen Lord now leads us as the Eternal Good Shepherd to green pastures, to die to sin, and to live with him and the Father, forever. Amen!

¡Amen!
