Lucas 20: En aquel tiempo, se acercaron a Jesús algunos saduceos. Como los saduceos niegan la resurrección de los muertos, le preguntaron: 28 “Maestro, Moisés nos dejó escrito que si alguno tiene un hermano casado que muere sin haber tenido hijos, se case con la viuda para dar descendencia a su hermano.

29 Hubo una vez siete hermanos, el mayor de los cuales se casó y murió sin dejar hijos. 30 El segundo, 31 el tercero y los demás, hasta el séptimo, tomaron por esposa a la viuda y todos murieron sin dejar sucesión. 32 Por fin murió también la viuda. 33 Ahora bien, cuando llegue la resurrección, ¿de cuál de ellos será esposa la mujer, pues los siete estuvieron casados con ella?”

34 Jesús les dijo: “En esta vida, hombres y mujeres se casan, 35 pero en la vida futura, los que sean juzgados dignos de ella y de la resurrección de los muertos, no se casarán 36 ni podrán ya morir, porque serán como los ángeles e hijos de Dios, pues él los habrá resucitado.

37 Y que los muertos resucitan, el mismo Moisés lo indica en el episodio de la zarza, cuando llama al Señor, Dios de Abraham, Dios de lsaac, Dios de Jacob. 38 Porque Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven”. Palabra del Señor

Luke 20: Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, 28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’

29 Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. 30 Then the second 31 and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; 35 but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36 They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise.

37 That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; 38 and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on Luke 20: Reflexiones en Lucas 20: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Nov. 10, 2013 The gospel reading for today is better appreciated if we know something about the Sadducees. They were not a large Jewish party. They were aristocratic and wealthy, and wished to keep their comforts and privileges. They were prepared to collaborate with the Romans in their government.

Las lecturas del evangelio de hoy serán mejor apreciadas si sabemos algo de los Saduceos. No eran un partido muy grande entre los Judíos. Eran aristócratas y ricos, y querían guardar sus comodidades y privilegios. Estaban preparados a colaborar con los Romanos en su gobierno.

They included most of the priests and the office of high priest. Wealthy landowners and merchants allied with them. They ceased to exist at the time of the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70 A.D.

They differed widely from the Pharisees in certain beliefs. They accepted only written scriptures, and attached great importance to the first five books of the Old Testament, called the Pentateuch. They did not accept the large body of oral law and tradition that was so dear to the Pharisees. Since to them immortality is not mentioned in the early books of the bible, they did not accept it. Also, they did not believe in angels and spirits.

Sus creencias eran muy distintas a las de los fariseos. Aceptaban solo las escrituras escritas. Le daban gran importancia a los primeros cinco libros del Viejo Testamento, llamado el Pentateuco. No aceptaban el cuerpo grande de la ley oral y la tradición que estimaban los fariseos. No aceptaban la idea de inmortalidad, siendo que para ellos no se menciona en los libros tempranos de la Biblia. Además, no creían en ángeles o en espiritos.

When they came to Jesus, their question was designed to make belief in the resurrection look ridiculous. In Deuteronomy 25:5-10 it is mentioned that if a group of brothers live together, and one of them died without having children from his wife, it was the duty of the next brother to take the widow as his wife and have children. If the second brother died without children, then the next brother was obligated to take the widow and have children, and so on.

Cuando vinieron a Jesús, su pregunta esta formulada de tal manera que hace un ridículo de la creencia en la resurrección. En Deuteronomio 25:5-10 se menciona que un grupo de hermanos vivían juntos, y que uno de ellos murió sin tener hijos de su esposa. Era la obligación del siguiente hermano tomar la viuda como su esposa y tener hijos. Si el segundo hermano muriera sin hijos, el siguiente hermano estaba obligado a tomar la viuda y tener hijos, y así sucesivamente.

The whole point was to keep the family name alive, and to keep the property in the family. The first-born had the right to inherit everything. He shared with his brothers and sisters if he wished. But he had the legal rights. And he in turn would have the legal right to pass it on to his first-born.

El punto era guardar vivo el nombre de la familia, y guardar la propiedad dentro de la familia. El primogénito tenia el derecho de heredar todo. Si él quería, podía compartir con sus hermanos y hermanas. Pero él tenia los derechos legales. Además, tenia el derecho legal para pasárselo a su primogénito.

The answer Jesus gives is clear. At the resurrection, the old laws of physical life no longer apply. We shall be like angels. There will be no marrying, or getting married. There will be no begetting of children. There will be no need for property, or real estate, or money, or the things that money can buy. The righteous will be satisfied with the glory of God.

La contestación de Jesús es clara. En la resurrección, las antiguas leyes de la vida física ya no aplican. Seremos como ángeles. No habrá eso de casarse. No se van a engendrar hijos. No habrá necesidad de propiedad, ni tierras, ni dinero, ni las cosas que el dinero compra. Los justos serán satisfechos con la gloria de Dios.

Jesus then cites the Book of Exodus 6:3 to make his point. The Book of Exodus is part of the Pentateuch. God calls himself the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. If God is still the God of these Patriarchs, it means they must still be alive. God must be the God of living people; And not of those who are dead. And if the Patriarchs are alive, this proves there is a resurrection.

Jesús entonces cita al Libro de Éxodo 6:3 para hacer su punto. El Libro de Éxodo es parte del Pentateuco. Dios se llama a sí mismo el Dios de Abran, el Dios de Isaac, y el Dios de Jacobo. What applications can I make? Jesus is Lord God and Messiah. He is the God of the living, not the dead. You must be born again in Baptism to be alive in the Spirit of God. Keep this life of Christ and the Spirit alive in you. Jesus works through the sacraments in a very special way. He comes in the sacrament of reconciliation and in the Eucharist, whenever you approach him. The sacramentals all lead you to Jesus in the sacraments. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” says the Lord in John 14:6. Stay alive in Christ Jesus!

¿Qué aplicaciones puedo hacer? Jesús es el Señor y Mesías. Él es el Dios de los vivos, y no de los muertos. Tienes que ser nacido una vez mas en el Bautismo para estar vivo en el Espirito de Dios. Guarda esta vida de Cristo y del Espirito vivo en ti. Jesús trabaja por medio de los sacramentos de una manera muy especial. Viene en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, y en la Eucaristía, cuando te acerques a Él. Todos los sacramentales te dirigen a Jesús en los sacramentos. “Yo soy el camino, la verdad, y la vida” dice el Señor en Juan 14:6. ¡Quédate vivo en Jesucristo!

Pope Francis reminds us to strive to live this life to the full, and not half-ways. You cannot say on Sunday that I love Jesus and I go to Mass and Holy Communion, and then forget about him the rest of the week. St Ignatius proposed that we examine our conscience every day, and work diligently on improving ourselves. This way we avoid getting tepid and indifferent. With St. Paul we say: “I want to know him and the power of his resurrection and to share in his sufferings by being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:10-11).

El Papa Francisco nos recuerda que hay que luchar para vivir esta vida en su plenitud, y no a medias. No puedes decir el domingo que amas a Jesús y que vas a Misa y a comulgar, y luego olvidarse de Él el resto de la semana. San Ignacio propone examinarse la conciencia todos los días, y ser diligentes en mejorarse cada día. De esta manera evitamos la tibieza y la indiferencia. Con San Pablo decimos “Lo que quiero es conocer a Cristo, sentir en mi el poder de su resurrección, tomar parte en sus sufrimientos y llegar a ser como Él en su muerte, con la esperanza de alcanzar la resurrección de los muertos” (Filipenses 3:10-11).
