Reflections on Matthew 5: Reflexiónes en Mateo 5: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. June 11, 2008 The gospel for today is part of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew. It is like the Inaugural Address is for an American President. It sets the stage for his administration. Jesus set the stage for his new religious movement. He explains his position as against the Law of Moses.

El evangelio de hoy es parte del Sermón del Monte en Mateo. Es como el Discurso Inaugural para un Presidente Americano. Establece el escenario para su adminstration Jesús establecio su escenario para su nuevo movimiento religioso. Explica su position hacia contra la Ley de Moisés.

Jesus came not to abolish, but to fulfill. Far from dying, the old moral order is to rise to a new life. In the Book of Revelation 1:8 Jesus says: “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” And in Revelations 21:5 Jesus says: “See, I make all things new.”

Jesús vino no para anular, sino que para cumplir. Lejos de morir, la antigua orden moral se ha de levantar a una nueva vida. En el Libro de Revelationes 1:8 Jesús dice: “Yo soy el Alfa y el Omega.” Y en Revelationes 21:5 Jesús dice “He aquí, Yo lo hago todo nuevo.”

And in Ezekiel 11:19-20 Jesus says: “I will give them a new heart, and put a new spirit within them; I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my ordinances, and obey them. They shall be my people, and I shall be their God.”

This New Order will be durable as the heavens and the earth. It will be permanent like a seal, and irrevocable, forever. Like a blessing, it will not be taken back. Esta Nueva Orden sera durable como los cielos y la tierra. Sera permanente como un sello, y sera irrevocable, para siempre. Como una bendición, no se va a retroceder.

Note that the distinguishing feature of the New Order is the perfection of the inner spirit, yet it will not get rid of external works. Noten que lo que distingue a la Nueva Orden es la perfection del espiritu interior, sin embargo no eliminara obras externas.

Therefore the New Kingdom of Jesus is more profound, demands a more generous sanctity, and has higher ideals than the Old. In John 1:17 it says that the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Therefore Jesus is greater than Moses. In Hebrews 3:3 Jesus has been counted worthy of as much more glory than Moses as the builder of a house has more honor than the house.

Por eso el Nuevo Reino de Jesús es mas profundo, y demanda una santidad mas generosa, y tiene ideales mas altas que en la Antigua Orden. En Juan 1:17 dice que la ley fue dada por Moisés, pero la gracia y la verdad vienen por Jesús. Entonces Jesús es mas grande que Moisés. En Hebreos 3:3 Jesús se considera digno de tanta mas gloria que Moisés asi como el constructor de una casa tiene mas honor que la casa.

In Hebrews 3:5-6 it says that Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ was faithful over God’s house as a son. En Hebreos 3:5-6 dice que Moisés fue fiel en todo lo de la casa de Dios asi como un siervo. Para testificar hacia las cosas que se iban a hablar después. Pero Jesucristo fue fiel sobre la casa de Dios como un hijo.

Jesus went on to say that you cannot repair an old cloth with a new one. And you cannot fill old wineskins with new wine (Matthew 9:17). Jesús procedio a decir que no se puede reparar a un pedazo de tela vieja con un nueva. Y no se puede llenar los odres viejos con nuevo vino (Mateo 9:17).

In other places Jesus would introduce his teachings as against the old ones by saying: “You have heard that it was said… but I say unto you…” (Matthew 5:21, 27, 38, 43). En otros lugares Jesús introdujo sus enseñanzas, como encontra de la antiguas diciendo: “Han oido que se dijo... pero Yo les digo a ustedes...” (Mateo 5:21, 27, 38, 43).

For example, In Matthew 5:9 Jesus says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” But in order to have peace, we need to deal with anger. Anger is to killing as thought is to a deed. Thus Jesus arrives at the root causes of social evils. And small things do matter.

Por ejemplo, en Mateo 5:9 Jesús dice: “Bienaventurados los que hacen la paz, porque les llamaran hijos de Dios.” Pero para tener paz, necesitamos tratar con el coraje. Ultimately, Jesus is teaching us how to keep the First Commandment: to love God, and adds a new command to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Mark 12:31). Ultimadamente, Jesús nos esta enseñando como guardar el Primer Mandamiento: Amar a Dios, y añade un nuevo mandamiento de amar al prójimo como a si mismo (Marcos 12:31).

In Matthew 5:8 Jesus says: “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.” Once again, we see that Jesus forbids not just adultery, which is exterior, but also lust, which is interior. That is the root of adultery. Christ did not come to abolish the ten commandments, which includes “You shall not commit adultery”. But he comes to establish a New Order which applies the axe to the root of adultery, and that is what purity will do.

En Mateo 5:8 Jesús dice “Bienaventurados los puros de corazon, porque ellos veran a Dios.” Una vez mas, vemos que Jesús prohibe no solo el adulterio, que es exterior, sino que tambien la lujuria, que es interior. Esto es la raiz del adulterio. Cristo no vino a anular los diez mandamientos, que incluye “No cometeras adulterio.” Pero vino a establecer una Nueva Orden que aplica el hacha a la raiz del adulterio, y eso es lo que hace la pureza.

So we have to keep in mind what St. Paul said: “Christ is the end of the law” (Romans 10:4). “All things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17). And the greatest of the Commandments is to love God and love one another as he loved us.

Entonces tenemos que tener en la mente lo que San Pablo dice: “Cristo es el fin de la ley (Romanos 10:4). “Todo fue creado por medio de Él y por Él. St. Paul in Romans 13:8 says: “He who loves has fulfilled the law. Owe no one anything, except to love one another.” In John 13:34-35 Jesus says: “Love one another as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” In Matthew 25:40 the Lord says, “As long as we did it to the least of the brethren, we did it to him.”

San Pablo en Romanos 13:8 dice: “Aquel que ama ha cumplido la ley. No deban nada a nadie, solo amense unos a los otros.” En Juan 13:34-35 Jesús dice: “Amanse unos a los otros como o los he amado. Por esto todos conoceran que son mis discípulos, si se aman unos a los otros.” En Mateo 25:40 el Señor dice: “Cuando lo hicieron al menos de los hermanos, lo hicieron a mi.”

Didn’t St. Paul say: “Aim for love?” That is what Jesus wants us to do. Jesus wants us to fulfill the law of love. In his New Order of things, love will last forever. The one who teaches whatever leads to the fulfillment of the commandment of love, will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

San Pablo nos dice: “Hagan su ideal el amor.” Es lo que Jesús quiere ha hagamos. Jesús quiere que cumplamos la ley del amor. En su Nuevo Orden, el amor perdura para siempre. Aquel que enseña cualesquier cosa que llegue al cumplimiento de la ley del amor, sera llamado grande en el Reino de los cielos.

Remember the story of the rich young man in Mark 10:17. He had kept the Old Testament Law, the ten commandments, since his youth. But Jesus looked at him and loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” That fulfils the law and the prophets. Are we lacking that one thing the young man lacked? Or are we ready to go all the way and give to the poor and follow Jesus?

Jesús lo miro con amor, y le dijo, “Solo te falta una cosa; ve, y vende lo que tengas, y daselo a los pobres, y entonces tendras un tesoro en el cielo; y ven, sigueme.” Eso cumple la ley y los profetas. ¿ Nos falta la sola cosa que le faltaba al joven rico ? O ¿ estamos listos a darselo todo a los pobres y seguir a Jesús ?
