Reflections on Mark 13:33 - 37 Reflexiones en Marcos 13:33 - 37 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Nov. 30, 2014 This is the First Sunday of Advent. The season of Advent is a preparation for the coming of God in the birth of Christ Jesus. The readings for the Mass for this Sunday speak about the waiting of the people of God for salvation. Let us see how Isaiah 63:16-17 spoke about this waiting. And then we shall see how St. Paul (1 Corinthians 1:3-9) urges us to wait. In the Gospel Jesus tells us to be alert, watchful, as we wait.

Hoy es el Primer Domingo de Adviento Hoy es el Primer Domingo de Adviento. El sazón de Adviento es una preparación para la venida de Dios en el nacimiento de Cristo Jesús. Las lecturas para la Misa de este Domingo hablan de la espera del Pueblo de Dios para la salvación. Vamos a ver como en Isaías 63:16-17 hablo de esta espera. Luego vamos a ver como San Pablo (1 Corintios 1:3-9) nos urge a esperar. En el Evangelio Jesús nos dice que hay que estar alertas y cuidadosos, al esperar.

Isaiah 63 was written towards the end of the Exile Isaiah 63 was written towards the end of the Exile. The people of God wondered why God let them wander far from his ways, when they hardened their hearts and feared him not. In punishment for their sins, they had been taken prisoners in the Exile for 70 years. Now that it was almost over, they begged him to return. They knew God was their father, they were the clay, and He is the potter. They hoped and prayed that when He came, they would be doing right. They knew that God does good deeds for those who wait for him.

In the Responsorial Psalm (80:8,15-16) we see that as they waited, they longed to see his face again. They begged him: “O Lord of Hosts, restore us; let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved. Turn again, Lord of hosts; look down from heaven and see; attend to this vine, the shoot your right hand has planted”. They must have remembered the times of Moses, when the mountains quaked when God spoke to him (Exodus 19:18 and Psalm 68:8). They remembered the awesome deeds of the Lord, in times past.

Vuelve de nuevo, Señor de los ejércitos; mira desde el cielo; asiste a esta viña, lo que tu mano derecha ha plantado”. Se han de haber recordado los tiempos de Moisés, cuando las montañas temblaban cuando Dios les hablaba (Éxodos 19:18 y Salmo 68:8). Recordaban aquellas maravillas del Señor, en tiempos pasados.

In the Second Reading of the Mass, St In the Second Reading of the Mass, St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:3-9, prays that the early Christians not be lacking in any spiritual gifts as they wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He assures them that He will keep them firm to the end, irreproachable and faithful. Psalm 25:5 says: “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. For you I wait all the long day, because of your goodness, Lord.”

En la Segunda Lectura de la Misa, San Pablo en 1 Corintios 1:3-9, pide que los primeros Cristianos no les falte ningún don espiritual al estar esperando la revelación de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Les asegura que Él los guardara firmes hasta el fin, irreprochables y fieles. Y el Salmo 25:5 dice: “Dirígeme en tu verdad y enséñame, porque tú eres mi Dios y mi Salvador. I like what Henri J. M. Nouwen says in a little pamphlet “In Joyful Hope, Meditations for Advent.” He says that waiting is essential to the spiritual life. But waiting as a disciple of Jesus is not an empty waiting. It is a waiting with a promise in our hearts that makes already present what we are waiting for. We wait during Advent for the birth of Jesus.

Me gusta lo que dijo El P. Henri J. M Me gusta lo que dijo El P. Henri J. M. Nouwen en su libreta: “En Esperanza Gozosa, Meditaciones para Adviento.” Dice que eso de esperar es esencial para la vida espiritual. Pero el esperar para un discípulo de Jesús no es un esperar vacío. Es un esperar con una promesa en nuestros corazones que hace ya presente lo que esperamos. Esperamos durante el Adviento el nacimiento de Jesús.

We wait after Easter for the coming of the Spirit, and after the Ascension of Jesus we wait for his coming again in glory. We are always waiting, but it is a waiting in the conviction that we have already seen God’s footsteps. Waiting for God is an active — yes, joyful — waiting. As we wait we remember him for who we are waiting, and as we remember him we create a community ready to welcome him when he comes.

Esperamos después de Pascua para la venida del Espíritu, y después de la Ascensión de Jesús esperamos su venida una vez mas en gloria. Siempre estamos esperando, pero es un esperar en la convicción de que ya hemos visto los pasos de Dios. Eso de esperar a Dios es una espera activa, sí, gozosa. Al esperar recordamos Aquel por quien estamos esperando. Y al recordarlo creamos una comunidad lista para recibirlo cuando Él venga.

In the Gospel, note how Jesus warns his disciples to be alert as they wait for God to come. “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. When he comes, may he not find you sleeping”. This reminds me of St. Basil, who said that he spent much of his youth sleeping with regard to the things of God. But one day he awoke, and found Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior, waiting for him. There was a flood of tears. He left all things and went to the desert to pray.

En el Evangelio de la Misa de hoy, notamos como Jesús aconseja a sus discípulos que estén alertas al esperar que Dios venga. “¡Velen, y estén preparados, porque no saben cuando llegara el momento. ¡No vaya a suceder que llegue de repente y los halle durmiendo!” Esto me recuerda de San Basilio, que dijo que paso la mayor parte de su juventud dormido en las cosas de Dios. Pero un día despertó, y encontró a Jesucristo esperándolo. Hubo un derrame de lagrimas. Dejo todo y se fue al desierto a rezar.

Henri Nouwen asks: “How do we wait for God. We wait with patience Henri Nouwen asks: “How do we wait for God? We wait with patience. But patience does not mean passivity. Waiting patiently is not like waiting for the bus to come, the rain to stop, or the sun to rise. It is an active waiting in which we live the present moment to the full in order to find there the signs of the One we are waiting for.

Henri Nouwen pregunta: “¿Cómo hay que esperar a Dios Henri Nouwen pregunta: “¿Cómo hay que esperar a Dios? Lo esperamos con paciencia. Pero la paciencia no es algo pasiva. Esperar con paciencia no es como estar esperando que venga el camión, o que deje de llover, o que el sol se levante. Es una espera activa en la cual vivimos en el momento presente a lo máximo, para allí encontrar las señas de Aquel que esperamos.

Waiting patiently is suffering through the present moment, tasting it to the full, and letting the seeds that are sown in the ground on which we stand grow into strong plants. Meanwhile we pay attention to what is happening right before our eyes and seeing there the first rays of God’s glorious coming”.

Esperar con paciencia es sufrir por el momento presente, probándolo en su plenitud, dejando que las semillas que están sembradas en el suelo en el cual estamos parados crezcan a ser plantas fuertes. Mientras tanto, ponemos atención a lo que esta sucediendo inmediatamente enfrente de nuestros ojos. Viendo allí los primeros rayos de la venida gloriosa de nuestro Dios.”

Remember Luke 17:20-21. “Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, Jesus answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘lo, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” We need look no further. Inner work is necessary to find the treasure hidden in a field. It is in silence and prayer, and in processing our inner thoughts that we will find God’s will.

Recuerden a Lucas 17:20-21. “Preguntado por los fariseos, cuando había de venir el reino de Dios, les respondió Jesús y dijo: El reino de Dios no vendra con advertencia, ni dirán: Helo aquí, o helo allí; porque he aquí el reino de Dios esta entre vosotros.” No es necesario buscar mas allá. El trabajo interior es necesario para encontrar el tesoro escondido en el campo. Es en el silencio y en la oración, al estar procesando nuestros pensamientos interiores, que vamos a encontrar a Dios.

St. Ignatius of Loyola admonished his followers to follow with constancy the vocation to which our Lord calls us. “Let us not render vain our first pledges of loyalty; for it is the way of the Enemy to suggest to those who live in solitude that they should take up relations with their neighbor and work for his good, while to those who work for the good of their fellow men he represents the great perfection of the solitary life; and so he puts before our eyes that which is far from us, in order to hinder us from accomplishing what is within our grasp.”

San Ignacio de Loyola aconseja a sus seguidores que sigan con constancia la vocación a la cual el Señor nos ha llamado. “ No hagamos vanas nuestras primeras promesas de lealtad; porque es de esta manera que el Enemigo sugiere a los que viven en soledad que deben estar en relación con sus vecinos y trabajar por su bien, mientras que a los que trabajan por el bien de su prójimo les representa la gran perfección de la vida solitaria; y así pone antes nuestros ojos algo que esta muy removido de nosotros, para impedir que hagamos algo que esta muy a nuestro alcance.”

This Advent let us joyfully await the coming of Jesus one more time into the world. We rejoice as we enjoy the particular gift of life and health and happiness in the present moment, where ever we are. We patiently suffer, perhaps, but we know that God loves us, and that he will come again soon. Amen! What Joy! What Happiness!

Este tiempo de Adviento, con gozo vamos a esperar la venida de Jesús una vez mas al mundo. Regocijamos en el don de cada día, el don de la vida, y de la salud, y de la felicidad del momento presente, en donde estemos. Con paciencia sufrimos, quizás, pero ya sabemos que Dios nos ama, y que Él vendrá una vez mas, ya pronto. ¡Amen! ¡Que gozo! ¡Que alegría!
