21 He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. 22 He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” 23 Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

June 23, 2013 Today is the Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time. We want to reflect on what the Gospel of Luke for today has to say. Then we will see some observations made by the Church Fathers, and the saints. Then we can make some applications.

Hoy es el Duodécimo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario Hoy es el Duodécimo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. Queremos hacer una reflexión acerca del Evangelio de San Lucas para hoy. When Jesus prayed in solitude, he was in intimate union with God our Father and with the Holy Spirit. He knew that it was time to ask the Apostles the very important question: “Who do the crowds say that I am?” When they identify him with the greatest men of their history, he then wants to hear what his closest friends have to say. He asks them: “But who do you say that I am?”

I can just imagine the Lord looking them straight in their eyes, without flinching. He wants an answer. He wants to see their facial expression. He wants to see courage in their faces. It is Peter who stands up and shows his leadership It is Peter who stands up and shows his leadership. He cries out: “You are the Christ!” Jesus already knew this was going to happen. However, he wanted all the Apostles to hear it. When Peter spoke up, Jesus knew Peter had the courage to lead, and to speak up for him in time of stress and strain. He knew he could build his church on that rock, because he had faith.

Here are some interesting observations from the Church Fathers Here are some interesting observations from the Church Fathers. Epiphanius the Latin (in Interpretation of the Gospels 28), is of the opinion that the Lord was not inclined to question his own disciples in Judea because he already knew that there the Jews did not believe that he was the Son of God. They regarded him merely as the son of Joseph, nothing more. They did not have any faith in him.

Aquí están unas observaciones interesantes de los Padres de la Iglesia Primitiva. Epifanio el Latín ( en Interpretación de los Evangelios 28), es de la opinión que el Señor no estaba inclinado a hacer esta pregunta de sus propios discípulos en Judea porque Él ya sabía que en ese lugar los Judíos no creían que Él era el Hijo de Dios. Lo veían solo como hijo de José, y nada más. No tenían fe en Él.

Theodore of Heraclea (in Fragment 101), holds that Jesus did this so as to find out what the popular opinions about him were among the Jews. In the same way we can ask people of today what they think about him. If it is bad, we can talk about it and remove the causes. If it is good, and expresses faith in Jesus Christ, we can affirm them so as to strengthen their faith.

Teodoro de Heraclea ( en Fragmentos 101), dice que Jesús hizo esto para saber cual era la opinión popular acerca de Él entre los Judíos. Origin, (in Commentary on Matthew 12 Origin, (in Commentary on Matthew 12.9), notes that the Jews were following corrupt thinking in saying he was John the Baptist, risen from the dead, with powers at work in him. This was exactly what Herod the Tetrarch was saying. Others said it was Elijah, born a second time, and that he had been alive somewhere all along and was now appearing again.

Some suggested Jeremiah was Jesus, and not that Jeremiah was a type of Jesus. Perhaps this was from a mistaken interpretation of the beginning of the Book of Jeremiah (1:10), where he prophesied about the Christ: that he would be set over nations and kingdoms, “to root up, and to build up, and to plant.”

He said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Christ means, “Anointed.” In the Old Testament many people were “anointed” or “christs”.

By associating the name “Christ” with the term “Son of God”, Peter indicates that Christ himself is life, and that death has no authority over him. Even if for a short while, in the flesh, he was weak and died, nevertheless he rose again, since the Word (God) dwelled in it. He could not be held under the bonds of death.

He says “Those who wish to give greater proof of their love, and to distinguish themselves in whatever concerns the service of the eternal King and Lord of all, will not only offer themselves entirely for the work, but will act against their sensuality and carnal and worldly love, and make offerings of greater value.”

San Ignacio de Loyola, (Ejercicios Espirituales #97), me viene a la mente. Dice: “Aquel que desea dar mayor prueba de su amor, y distinguirse en cualquier cosa que tenga que ver con el servicio del Rey Eterno, y Señor de todo, no solo se ofrecerá a sí mismo enteramente para la obra, sino que actuara contra su sensualidad y contra la carne, y contra el amor de lo mundano, haciendo ofrecimientos de mayor valor.”

St. Paul says: “Be willing to fill up the sufferings lacking in Jesus for the sake of his Body” (Colossians 1:24). And St. Peter says, “Rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s suffering, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed” (1 Peter 4:13). Don’t worry! Christ himself will restore, strengthen, and establish you!

San Pablo dice: “ Hay que llenar los sufrimientos que le faltaron a Jesús, por su Cuerpo” (Colosenses 1:24). Y San Pedro, dice: “Regocijen tanto cuanto compartan en los sufrimientos de Cristo, para que también se regocijen y estén alegres cuando su gloria sea manifestada” ( 1 Pedro 4:13). ¡No se preocupen! Nuestro Señor Jesucristo mismo los recobrará, fortalecerá, y los establecerá.

In summary, as soon as you recognize that Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, chosen by the Father, like St. Peter, Jesus immediately invites you to pick up your cross and follow him all the way, in total commitment to God’s will, like St. Ignatius Loyola suggests. You will rejoice with St. Paul, in gratitude for having been chosen! Glory to God!

En resumen, al reconocer que Jesús es el Ungido, el Cristo, escogido por el Padre, como lo hizo San Pedro, Jesús inmediatamente te invita a levantar tu cruz y seguirlo hasta el final para cumplir la voluntad de Dios, como lo sugiere San Ignacio de Loyola. Regocija con San Pablo, en gratitud por haber sido escogido. ¡Gloria a Dios!
