Dear Parents, Spring is almost here and the flowers are blooming! Please make sure that your child brings a jacket to school, some days it is a little brisk at our recess time. We are halfway through 3 rd quarter and there are a lot of literacy and math goals to be met. Please read this newsletter and look back over your child’s progress report (attached if you have returned a signed copy) to see how they are progressing towards these goals. – Mrs. Hard March News Social Studies Students will continue learning how to read maps. Students will learn to distinguish between maps and globes. Students will also begin learning symbols of our country and what they represent. Students will also be comparing living in the country and living in the city. Students will decide whether they would prefer city or country living. Science This month in science we will continue learning about weather. We will work on understanding the effects that weather can have on our lives. We will learn about how weather effects the clothes we wear, the activities we participate in, and what happens in nature each season. Supply wish list: glue sticks and 3x5 inch index cards

Literacy Long vowel sounds and rules will be introduced this month. The goal for independent reading is to be at a level B or C by the end of the month. Please have your child practice reading independently every night. This means your child needs to try and figure out unknown words instead of being told the answer. Encourage your child to use these strategies when they get to an unknown word: *Look at the picture. *Get your mouth ready. *Stretch out the sounds. *Skip over that word. *Does that make sense? We continue adding new sight words weekly. Knowing these words is extremely important to your child’s reading success. A great website to check out is Look for the teacher “Pinewood Kindergarten.” All of our words are listed by month, and your child can practice them by playing games. Math Maniacs This month we will be beginning to lay the ground work for addition. We will be counting different groups of items and then adding them together. You can practice this with your child by having them count multiple types of items in your home. For example, you can have your child count how many spoons are in the drawer, then how many forks are in the drawer, and how much silverware there is altogether. Try this with a variety of items all throughout your home. Please continue to work on counting with your child, they should be able to count to 75 by the end of March. They also need to be able to identify the numerals 0 – 20 when they are in a non-sequential order. A good math website to check out is Mrs. Hard’s Kindergarten March 2012 Pinewood Elementary School
