-Sometimes you use an impersonal expression to express how you influence another person’s actions.

Impersonal Expressions (that are often followed by que+ subjunctive) es importante es necesario es mejor es bueno es posible Es necesario que Uds. tengan buenos modales. It’s necessary that you have good manners. Es mejor que consigamos una habitación doble. It’s better that we get a double room.

If no person is specified, the infinitive is used without que. Note that in the previous examples, a specific person is mentioned in the second half of the sentence. If no person is specified, the infinitive is used without que. Compare the following sentences. Para ser un buen turista, es importante ser muy cortés. To be a good tourist, it’s important to be very polite. Es importante que seas un turista cortés. It’s important that you be a polite tourist.

Para ser cortés . . . Para ser cortés en un país extranjero, ¿qué debes hacer? Completa las frases con la forma apropiada del verbo.

1. Es mejor que no (llegar/ llevar) pantalones cortos si visitas la catedral. 2. Es importante que le (dar/ir) una propina al hombre que te ayuda con el equipaje. 3. Es necesario que (ser/ver) puntual para no enojar a los otros miembros de tu grupo.

4. Es bueno que les (ofender/ofrecer) a los ancianos tu asiento en el autobús. 5. Es mejor que (poder/ponerse) algo sobre tu traje de baño cuando entras en el hotel. 6. Es importante que (observar/asistir) las costumbres de las personas que viven allí.
