La a personal

The basic rule The a precedes a specific person or persons used as a direct object. – Levantó la taza. He lifted the cup. – Levantó a la muchacha. He lifted the girl. – Recuerdo el libro. I remember the book. – Recuerdo a mi abuela. I remember my grandmother.

When the person is an indirect object you use the a only when it is to him/her I give a gift to you Te doy un regalo a ti. I tell María the truth. Le digo la verdad a María. *Still see the a but it is NOT the personal a the a is the prepositions to working with the person as an indirect object!

The personal a with pets???? Many pet owners think of their animals as people, and so does Spanish grammar, so the personal a is used. – Yo amo a mi perro, Dudley. I love my dog, Dudley. But the personal a isn't used with ordinary animals (you have to love them!). – Ms. Greenless recibió un conejo, Peanut, cuando tenía 11 años. Oh no! Ms. G did not love her rabbit, Peanut. If she had, she would have used the personal a when describing him. Or her. She cant even remember!

Tener and Haber Usually the personal a is not used with tener and haber. Yo tengo 2 hijos. Hay dos chicos guapos en mi clase de historia.

Indefinite person NO specific person I need a doctor (any doctor) Necesito médico I dont know a single great grandmother No conozco una sola bisabuela We need a teacher (any teacher) Necesitamos maestro

So… leaving off the personal a completely changes the meaning of a sentence!!! El FBI busca a un hombre de 40 años The FBI is looking for a 40 old man. (a specific man)! El FBI busca un hombre de 40 años The FBI is looking for a 40 old man (any 40 year man, to play a role or something)

Also… You must be careful when questioning and use A quién when your answer will require a personal a! ¿Quién está en el baño? (no personal a) - Pablo está en el baño ¿A quién abrazas? (need personal a) _ Abrazo a mis padres mucho. Porque los amo

La a personal: Los Verbos Más Comunes 1.Abrazar 2.Admirar 3.Ayudar 4.Besar 5.Conocer 6.Llamar 7.Ver
