2 Affirmative and Negative words are antonyms AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE
someone; anyone no one; nobody something; anything nothing some; any (pronoun) no; none; not any (adjective) always never also; too; either neither; not either either or neither nor alguien nadie algo nada alguno; alguna(s) ninguno; ninguna(s) ningún/ningunos ninguna/ningunas algún/algunos alguna/algunas siempre nunca también tampoco o…o ni…ni

3 AFFIRMATIVE WORDS: Ejemplos: 1. They always arrive late
2. Someone wants to go to their locker. 3. I also sing and play the guitar. 4. Some boys play basketball. 5. We need something for dinner. 6. Are you giving some speech today? NEGATIVE WORDS: Recuerda it is acceptable and necessary to have a in Spanish when a negative word follows a verb double negative Unlike English, Spanish does not normally mix negative and affirmative words . . . English Maria doesn’t need anything NOT Maria doesn’t need nothing Spanish Maria no necesita nada NOT Maria no necesita algo Example: José isn’t seeing anyone. José no ve a nadie

5 Negative words may come before or after the verb
If it comes AFTER the verb, we must use a no before the verb Ejemplo: 1. She never plays sports. Ella nunca juega deportes or No juega nunca deportes 2. None of the boys want pizza Ninguno de los chicos quieren pizza. or No quieren pizza ninguno de los chicos.

7 Alguno, alguna, algunos, algunas
and Ninguno, ninguna, ningunos, ningunas have to agree with the noun it refers to in NUMBER (singular/plural) and GENDER (masculine/feminine) Ejemplos: I bought some books We don’t have any classes together (juntos). Yo compré algunos libros. Nosotros no tenemos ningunas clases juntos.

8 II.When and come before a masculine singular noun, they change to and alguno ninguno algún ningún Ejemplo: I don’t have any project No tengo ningún proyecto. alguien nadie III. When and are used as direct objects the personal is used: Por ejemplo: I don’t know anyone. a No conozco a nadie
