EL PRETÉRITO The preterit is one of two past tenses. This verb tense is used when we talk about a past action that:  Happened one time  Interrupted something already going on  Was the beginning of an event  Was the end of an event  Describes the specific events that took place in a story  Describes the end of a story

EVENTS THAT HAPPENED ONCE  Mi familia y yo comimos en un restaurante ayer.  Mamá preparó la cena el sábado pasado.

INTERRUPTING SOMETHING ALREADY GOING ON Llovía mucho cuando Juan tuvo un accidente. Yo tocaba el piano cuando el teléfono sonó.

THE BEGINNING OF AN EVENT  Los chicos comenzaron a hacer la tarea.  Al principio, La señora Rizzolo nos dio mucha tarea.

THE END OF AN EVENT OR STORY. Por fín, el príncipe y la princesa se casaron y vivieron felices. Dejó de llover a las 4:00.

DESCRIBING THE SPECIFIC EVENTS OF A STORY  De repente un príncipe apareció en el bosque.  Fue cuando un enano capturó al ladrón.

AN EVENT THAT HAPPENED MANY TIMES This is something that “used to” happen or “would” happen.  Cuando era niña, iba al parque con mi abuela.  De niños, mis amigos no compartían sus juguetes.

AN EVENT THAT WAS IN PROGRESS.  Juan y Antonio hacía la tarea mientras José miraba la televisión.  Carlos limpiaba su cuarto cuando su padre llegó a casa

A: Age, attitude, appearance Julio tenía cinco años. Mis abuelos eran altos y generosos.

L: Location Las pirámides estaban en Perú.

W: Weather Hacía muy buen tiempo. Nevaba mucho en el invierno.
