The imperfect is used for actions that were repeated habitually. La señorita Woeste siempre daba tarea. Ms. Woeste always gave homework. Los perros comían la tarea de Ernesto todos los días. The dogs ate Ernest’s homework every day.

The imperfect is used for actions that “set the stage” for another action. Nosotros leíamos cuando mi papá entró. We were reading when my dad entered. (Note: “entered” is preterit) Señor Castañeda bebía café cuando le golpeó un avión de papel. Mr. Castañeda was drinking coffee when he was hit by a paper airplane.

The imperfect is used for telling time and stating one’s age. ¡Demi Moore tenía 16 años cuando Ashton Kutcher tenía 1 año! Demi Moore was 16 years old when Ashton Kutcher was one year old. Eran las siete de la noche. It was seven at night.

The imperfect is used for physical descriptions in the past. Christina Aguilera tenía pelo negro pero ahora tiene pelo rubio. Christina Aguilera had black hair but now she has blonde hair. Chad Johnson llevaba un casco. Chad Johnson was wearing a helmet.

The imperfect is used for information surrounding an event. Llovía cuando fuimos al partido de fútbol. It was raining when we went to the soccer game. Mercedes concentraba cuando sirvió el balón de vóleibol. Mercedes was concentrating when she served the volleyball.

Bean no corrigió los papeles sino los escondió. Bean did not grade the papers, but he hid them. Luego, Bean se durmió. Then Bean fell asleep.
